Detailed Job Description
The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs to ensure a safe and compliant workplace within the mining operation. This role is critical in fostering a culture of safety and minimizing risks to employees, contractors, and the surrounding environment.
Key responsibilities include:
Policy Implementation and Compliance: Ensuring that all workplace activities comply with Zambian occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation, as well as company policies and industry best practices. This involves interpreting regulations and translating them into practical site-specific procedures.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Conducting regular and systematic risk assessments of all work areas, processes, and equipment to identify potential hazards. The officer will recommend and implement effective control measures to eliminate or mitigate these risks.
Incident Investigation and Reporting: Leading or participating in investigations of workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses. This involves identifying root causes, compiling detailed investigation reports, and recommending corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
Safety Audits and Inspections: Performing routine and unannounced safety inspections of the mine site, including workstations, machinery, and storage areas. The officer will conduct formal safety audits to evaluate the effectiveness of existing safety programs and ensure adherence to standards.
Training and Awareness: Developing and delivering safety training programs and toolbox talks for all levels of staff. This includes induction training for new employees, refresher courses, and specialized training on topics such as working at heights, confined space entry, and emergency response procedures.
Emergency Preparedness: Developing, maintaining, and testing emergency response plans for potential scenarios such as fires, chemical spills, and medical emergencies. This includes coordinating drills and ensuring that all emergency equipment is in good working order.
Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all safety-related activities, including incident reports, inspection logs, training records, risk assessments, and safety committee meeting minutes.
Continuous Improvement: Monitoring safety performance metrics, analyzing trends, and proactively recommending improvements to safety systems and procedures to enhance the overall safety culture and performance of the mine.
Requirements (Who Should Apply)
Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) certification is an added advantage.
Minimum of 1 to 2 years' experience in a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) role, preferably within the mining, manufacturing, or heavy industrial sector.
Sound knowledge of occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation applicable to the mining industry in Zambia.
Proven experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
Strong communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and engage employees at all levels.
Must be a resident of Chambishi, Chingola, Mufulira, Kalulushi, or Kitwe.
