Job Summary:
The Safety Superintendent is responsible for developing, enforcing, and managing the company’s health, safety, and environmental policies to ensure a zero-harm workplace. This role involves supervising field safety teams, conducting risk assessments, conducting incident investigations, and ensuring compliance with all legal and company standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- HSE Management System: Lead the implementation of the HSE Management System, ensuring alignment with corporate and regulatory standards.
- Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular site audits, inspections, and hazard identification, ensuring corrective actions are implemented promptly.
- Incident Investigation: Lead root cause analysis for all incidents, near-misses, and accidents to prevent recurrence.
- Training & Education: Develop and deliver safety training programs, site inductions, and toolbox talks.
- Regulatory Compliance: Maintain valid permits, licenses, and documentation in accordance with legal obligations.
- Leadership: Supervise safety officers/coordinators, promoting a proactive safety culture.
- Reporting: Track and report safety performance indicators to senior management.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) - Safety KPI Examples
These metrics, divided into leading (proactive) and lagging (reactive), should be tracked to measure success.
1. Leading Indicators (Proactive - Future Performance)
- Safety Audit Completion: Percentage of scheduled, high-quality, site-wide safety inspections completed on time.
- Training Attendance Rate: Percentage of employees completing required safety training.
- Hazard Reporting Frequency: Number of near-misses or potential hazards identified and reported per month.
- Corrective Action Closure Rate: Percentage of safety action items closed within the designated timeframe.
- Supervisor/Manager Site Visits: Number of formal, documented, behavioral-based safety interactions (e.g., safety walkthroughs).
2. Lagging Indicators (Reactive - Past Performance)
- Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR): Total number of recordable incidents (injury/illness) per 100 employees.
- Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR): Number of lost time injuries per million man-hours worked.
- Average Days to Close Investigations: Average time taken to complete investigations of incidents.
- Safety Audit Findings: Total number of non-compliance issues identified during external or internal audits.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or relevant field.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of safety experience, with 2 years in a supervisory role (mining/construction preferred).
- Skills: Proficiency in risk assessment, incident investigation (e.g., Root Cause Analysis), and data reporting.
