About the role

The School Librarian will establish and manage a library serving learners and teachers across the primary and secondary sections.

  • Receive, catalogue, label and organise the school's book collection.
  • Establish clear systems for borrowing, returning and tracking books.
  • Manage take-home reading books and other shared reading resources.
  • Support guided reading and class-reading programmes.
  • Help teachers and learners select suitable books and information sources.
  • Promote reading through displays, reading activities and school events.
  • Teach learners how to use the library and find information responsibly.
  • Monitor the condition and use of books and other library resources.
  • Maintain accurate library records and prepare reports on usage and stock.
  • Work closely with teachers to support curriculum needs and learner progress.

The person we are looking for

We are looking for an organised and enthusiastic librarian who understands that a school library should actively support teaching, learning and a strong reading culture.

  • Strong organisation and record-keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of library cataloguing and circulation systems.
  • An interest in children's and young-adult literature.
  • The ability to encourage children and young people to read.
  • Confidence working with both primary and secondary learners.
  • Good communication and teamwork.
  • Basic competence in using digital library and information systems.
  • Integrity, sound judgement and commitment to safeguarding children.
  • Warmth, approachability and a good sense of humour.
  • Adaptability and willingness to help establish a new school library from the beginning.

Qualifications and experience

  • A bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or a closely related field.
  • Knowledge of cataloguing, classification and book-management systems.
  • Experience working in a school, academic or public library.

Experience establishing a library or managing a school reading programme will be an added advantage.

Competitive remuneration is on offer. The appointment will be made on a 3-year contract.
