Our client, a leading Elevator and HVAC company, is looking for a Senior Elevator Engineer to join their team in Lusaka, Zambia.

Role Overview

The Senior Elevator Engineer will lead the full engineering lifecycle of elevator systems, including design, installation, commissioning, preventive and corrective maintenance, inspection, and modernization. This role requires a highly skilled engineering professional with strong technical expertise, problem‑solving capability, leadership experience, and the ability to deliver high‑quality vertical transportation solutions safely and efficiently. The successful candidate will serve as the technical lead on all elevator projects, support junior technicians, ensure compliance with international industry standards, and work closely with clients, contractors, and management to ensure project success.

This position is based in Lusaka, Zambia, and the successful candidate must be willing to relocate.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

  • Perform elevator system design, configuration, and technical calculations for traction, hydraulic, MRL, and machine‑room systems.
  • Create and interpret engineering schematics, layout drawings, wiring diagrams, and structural interface requirements.
  • Conduct site assessments, feasibility studies, and equipment selection based on building specifications.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable safety standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.

Installation & Project Execution

  • Lead and supervise the installation of new elevators and escalators, ensuring adherence to technical specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Oversee installation teams, subcontractors, and on‑site technicians to ensure safe and efficient project delivery.
  • Inspect mechanical and electrical components during installation to ensure correct assembly, alignment, and calibration.
  • Coordinate with civil, electrical, and mechanical contractors to ensure seamless integration with building systems.

Commissioning & Testing

  • Perform full system commissioning including load testing, safety circuit verification, and performance optimization.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical, electronic, control‑system, and mechanical faults during commissioning phase.
  • Prepare commissioning documentation, compliance reports, and handover packages for clients.
  • Ensure elevators meet ride quality, safety, and operational performance standards before handover.

Maintenance & Modernisation

  • Plan and perform preventive and corrective maintenance for elevators and escalators, ensuring high system uptime.
  • Diagnose faults using advanced tools, control systems, and safety diagnostics.
  • Replace, upgrade, and repair major components including motors, drives, controllers, ropes, door equipment, and safety gear.
  • Lead modernization projects to improve ride performance, energy efficiency, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with global elevator safety codes (EN, IEC, ASME, SABS, or equivalent).
  • Conduct technical audits, safety inspections, and risk assessments.
  • Maintain accurate technical records, service logs, and inspection reports.
  • Provide technical training, mentorship, and support to field technicians and junior engineers.

Client, Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Communicate with clients regarding project updates, maintenance schedules, and technical recommendations.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, OEMs, and regulatory authorities.
  • Assist with technical proposals, quotations, bills of materials, and tender documentation when required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or related field).
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in the elevator/escalator industry.
  • Strong expertise across design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and modernisation.
  • Demonstrated experience with major elevator OEMs (e.g., Otis, Schindler, KONE, TK Elevator, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Fujitec).
  • Strong knowledge of international elevator standards and safety codes.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic tools, drive systems, controllers, and PLC‑based control systems.
  • Ability to read and develop technical drawings and schematics.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Leadership and team‑supervision experience.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Valid passport and willingness to relocate to Lusaka, Zambia.
