Location: Solwezi, North-Western Province, Zambia — part-time present during the product development stage; travel to customer mine sites around Zambia and the DR Congo (in phase 2)

Engagement Type: Independent Consultancy — contract basis, linked to the product development and potentially commissioning phase, extendable by mutual agreement

About Us

OLIBUL Investments Limited is a proudly Zambian, citizen-owned company with over a decade of operations in sand mining, limestone quarrying, industrial minerals, and cross-border bulk haulage freight across the North-Western Province and the regional SADC corridor. We are now developing our flagship Byela Steel Grinding Media Manufacturing Facility in Solwezi — Forged and High-chrome cast steel grinding media for the mines & mills of Zambia and the region — and we are engaging a senior metallurgical/hydro-metallurgical consultant to participate on its product development.

Assignment Purpose

We are seeking a seasoned metallurgist and metals expert with proven grinding media development experience/track record, on a consultancy contract, to provide external support to the Byela team: finalising alloy chemistries and heat-treatment recipes, validating the billet and charge-material strategy, building the specification and test regime, validating the plant laboratory and quality systems, and steering the delivery plan for trial campaigns alongside our international EPC technology/ Build operate and transfer partner — so that the plant enters production with its metallurgy already de-risked.

Scope of Consultancy Services

Product & Process validation

— Asses the developed asset, analyze , and Lock the alloy chemistries and heat-treatment recipes for the forged grades and the high-chromium cast grades, including forging reduction and quench-and-temper practice.

Billet & Charge-Material Strategy

— Validate procurement specifications for round bar and cast-line charge materials; verify mill certificates against specification; qualify suppliers.

Specification & Test Protocol Development

— Build the Master Product Specification and the full test regime: surface and volumetric hardness, impact, drop-ball and marked-ball trials, microstructure and dimensional control.

Laboratory & QA System validation

— Asses the specified plant laboratory (spectrometry, metallography, hardness) and design an ISO 9001-aligned quality management system with batch traceability, ready for deployment.

EPC / Technology-Partner Liaison

— Act as the owner's technical counterpart through installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing.

Customer engagement & Co-Creation Support

— Lead plant trials and wear-rate benchmarking with mine customers in Zambia and the DR Congo, feeding results back into product development.

Knowledge Transfer & Handover

— Codify SOPs, mentor the in-house technical team, and execute a structured handover to the permanent Head of Metallurgical and Metals.

Minimum 15 years' post-qualification experience, including senior roles in large-scale grinding media and/or steel billet manufacturing plants (forging, foundry, heat treatment).

Demonstrated mastery of induction melting and alloy charge control, high-chromium white cast irons, forged-ball production, and quench-and-temper practice.

A track record serving large-scale mining operations in Zambia, the DR Congo, or comparable jurisdictions, including grinding media performance evaluation.

Fluent command of the applicable standards for grinding media and steel bar (ASTM / ISO / GB), mill-certificate interpretation, and spectrographic analysis

Added Advantages

MSc or postgraduate qualification in metallurgy or materials engineering.

ACEZ membership (where engaged in a consulting-engineer capacity) and SAIMM membership.

ISO 9001 implementation or lead-auditor training.

Prior technical input to bankable feasibility studies or DFI-financed projects.
