About Bumara

Bumara is building a compliance operations platform that helps Zambian businesses stay compliant, confident, and audit-ready. Our platform supports workflows across regulators such as ZRA, NAPSA, PACRA, NHIMA, Local Government, and other compliance bodies.

We are looking for an experienced software developer who can help us build reliable enterprise-grade systems, integration tools, workflow automation, payment flows, document handling, audit trails, and backoffice operations software.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex business problems with clean, scalable, and secure software.

Role Summary

We are hiring a Senior Software Developer – Integrations & Enterprise Systems to help design, build, and scale Bumara’s core platform.

The ideal candidate has strong experience building production systems, backend APIs, business process automation tools, integration layers, internal dashboards, payment workflows, enterprise applications, and secure data-driven platforms.

You will work closely with product, operations, compliance, and leadership to turn real business workflows into dependable software.

Key Responsibilities

As the Senior Software Developer, you will:

  • Design and build scalable backend systems for compliance workflows, filings, service requests, tasks, approvals, payments, and documents.
  • Build integration tools for third-party systems such as payment providers, accounting tools, document storage, identity providers, notification services, and future regulator APIs.
  • Develop secure APIs, background jobs, queues, workflow engines, dashboards, and internal operations tools.
  • Improve automation for backoffice teams, including task assignment, status tracking, evidence uploads, SLA monitoring, and audit trails.
  • Build reliable data models for obligations, filings, service requests, payments, regulator payouts, users, organizations, and documents.
  • Ensure strong security practices, including role-based access control, tenant isolation, audit logging, signed URLs, and protection of sensitive business data.
  • Work with product and operations teams to understand business processes and translate them into clear technical solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
  • Review pull requests, document technical decisions, and help establish engineering standards.
  • Support production deployments, debugging, monitoring, and performance improvements.

Required Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, preferably building enterprise or business-critical systems.
  • Strong backend development experience using technologies such as Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, Go, or similar.
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs, webhooks, background jobs, and third-party integrations.
  • Strong database experience, especially with PostgreSQL, relational modelling, migrations, indexing, and transactional workflows.
  • Experience with authentication, authorization, multi-tenant systems, and role-based permissions.
  • Good understanding of system design, API design, error handling, logging, observability, and performance.
  • Experience building admin dashboards, internal tools, workflow systems, or enterprise SaaS products.
  • Ability to understand business requirements and convert them into practical technical solutions.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with both technical and non-technical teams.

Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience with any of the following will be an advantage:

  • TypeScript, React, Next.js, Hono, Express, NestJS, or similar frameworks.
  • PostgreSQL with Drizzle ORM, Prisma, or similar tools.
  • Cloudflare Workers, Cloudflare R2, AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar cloud platforms.
  • Payment integrations such as mobile money, card payments, payment gateways, reconciliation, or payout systems.
  • Document management, file storage, signed URLs, PDF generation, or audit evidence workflows.
  • Accounting, payroll, tax, compliance, fintech, ERP, or government/regulator systems.
  • Queue systems, cron jobs, background processing, event-driven architecture, or workflow automation.
  • Experience building systems for SMEs, finance teams, accountants, or operations teams.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Practical and product-minded.
  • Comfortable working on complex workflows.
  • Strong at backend and system design.
  • Able to build simple solutions for complicated business problems.
  • Security-conscious and careful with financial/compliance data.
  • Comfortable working in an early-stage product environment.
  • Able to take ownership and deliver without constant supervision.
  • Interested in building software that solves real problems for African businesses.

Why Join Bumara

At Bumara, you will work on meaningful software that supports businesses with compliance, filings, payments, documents, and audit readiness.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Build a platform from the ground up.
  • Work on real enterprise systems, not just simple CRUD apps.
  • Influence architecture, engineering standards, and product direction.
  • Build tools used by businesses, compliance teams, and backoffice operations.
  • Work on a product designed for the Zambian and African SME market.
  • Help create infrastructure that can scale as regulator APIs, automation, and digital compliance mature.
