The Superintendent, Health & Safety Mining is responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and First Quantum’s global standards. The role is critical in maintaining a safe workplace and promoting a culture of safety excellence across all mining operations.

Key Responsibilities for Superintendent Safety Mining Jobs in Solwezi

  • Lead the Health & Safety team by developing and maintaining strategic direction for safety initiatives and programs within the mining division.
  • Implement and monitor effective health and safety risk management systems, including conducting risk assessments and overseeing incident reporting and investigations.
  • Maintain clear communication on health and safety matters across all organizational levels.
  • Apply Critical Control measures to mitigate fatal hazards identified through risk assessments.
  • Ensure adherence to the Mineral Regulatory Commission’s (MRC) Management Systems and conduct scheduled audits and inspections to promote safe work practices.
  • Analyze trends and performance indicators to identify safety gaps and implement corrective actions.
  • Liaise with government bodies including the Ministry of Labour, Zambia Police Service, and other relevant authorities.
  • Coordinate occupational health surveillance and promote wellness initiatives to reduce injuries and illnesses.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Degree or Diploma in Mining or related Engineering fields.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Health and Safety is mandatory.
  • Certified qualifications by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
  • At least 8 years of senior management experience in health and safety, preferably within an Open Pit Copper mining environment.
  • Proven experience managing large teams of health and safety professionals.
  • Strong knowledge of mining regulations, occupational health and safety legislation, and critical risk management.
  • Experienced in stakeholder management and regulatory compliance.

Professional Skills and Behavioral Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and innovative thinking abilities.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams and drive positive change.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage priorities independently.
  • High integrity and a commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Operational and Physical Requirements

  • Self-driven with strong organizational and planning capabilities.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Power BI reporting.
  • Physically fit to navigate mine license areas including open pits, concentrator, smelter, and tailings.
  • Capable of preparing detailed reports for company management and relevant government agencies.
