This role is responsible for undertaking installations, maintenance and repairs on protection equipment to ensure reliability, stability and selectivity in the operations of Protection Schemes.

The position will report to the Supervisor – Protection.

Responsibilities or duties

  • Carry out calibration of relays to ensure relays operate within their specification.
  • Carry out condition-based maintenance of protection schemes to ensure smooth operation of the Protection in times of fault.
  • Carry out repair of Protection Schemes and their relays to put back defective schemes in operation.
  • Get involved in the installation and commissioning of protection schemes for the purposes of upgrading existing schemes and meeting new load expansions.
  • Carry out maintenance activities most effectively and efficiently to ensure that they are performed right the first time.
  • Undertake and complete the given assignment within the allocated time frame to avoid unnecessary overtime.
  • Ensure that all company resources under the section are used solely for company purposes and that there is no misuse of assets such as vehicles, tools etc.
  • Carry out calibration of relays to ensure relays operate within their specification.

  • Undertake preventive measures for unsafe practices, and conduct toolbox talks before every activity is undertaken.

  • Undertake any other job that may be assigned to him from time to time in compliance with company’s programmes of multiskilling.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

  • Grade 12 Full certificate
  • Technician’s Certificate in Electrical or Electronics Engineering
  • Member of EIZ
  • Understanding of power systems
  • Understanding of engineering drawings

Experience needed

  • Minimum 3 years’ post-qualification experience gained in an environment of similar context and complexity
  • Carry out calibration of relays to ensure relays operate within their specification.
  • Carry out condition-based maintenance of protection schemes to ensure smooth operation of the Protection in times of fault.
  • Carry out repair of Protection Schemes and their relays to put back defective schemes in operation.
