Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly committed employee for the position of Civil Engineer Tailings – LEP (Fixed Term) to join the Lumwana Expansion Project Team. We are in search of an individual who can champion Barrick’s DNA by:

Reporting to the Project Lead – LEP, you will be responsible for executing the construction of the Tailings Storage Facility and Water Storage Facilities (TSF/WSF), and those projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.

The TSF planned for the Lumwana Expansion will increase the current storage to two billion tons of tailings and will be among the largest tailings storage facilities globally. It will be constructed and raised significantly over the coming years and presents an exciting opportunity to be involved with a large TSF construction on a world-class project.

Responsibilities or duties

Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise and coordinate daily construction activities to ensure safe, efficient, and quality project execution.
  • Manage contractors, subcontractors, and construction teams to ensure compliance with project schedules, specifications, contractual requirements, and project objectives.
  • Supervise multi-disciplinary construction activities including TSF and WSF construction, earthworks, concrete works, SMPP works, E, C&I works, roads, utilities, water and sewer reticulation, and associated infrastructure.
  • Ensure construction activities comply with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), site-specific Tailings Management Systems, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Manage embankment construction, TSF raises, filter zones, drainage systems, decant structures, spillways, seepage control systems, and associated water management infrastructure.
  • Review and verify survey data, construction records, quality control results, and material compliance documentation.
  • Monitor construction schedules, identify risks and constraints, and implement mitigation measures to achieve project milestones and delivery targets.
  • Ensure all work is executed in accordance with approved Method Statements, Risk Assessments, Permit-to-Work systems, and project procedures.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, toolbox talks, safety audits, and quality reviews to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, work packages, and execution plan to ensure works are completed in accordance with approved requirements.
  • Coordinate construction interfaces between contractors, engineers, surveyors, quality teams, operations personnel, and other project stakeholders.
  • Ensure effective implementation of Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) requirements, including inspections, testing, punch listing, defect management, and close-out activities.
  • Ensure construction records required for TSF certification, regulatory compliance, and project handover are maintained and accurately reported.
  • Maintain accurate construction records, daily reports, progress tracking, cost awareness, and project documentation.
  • Participate in project progress meetings and provide regular updates on safety, quality, schedule, risk, and project performance.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Full Grade Twelve (12) School Certificate.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • Registered Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
  • Strong understanding of TSF construction methodologies, embankment raises, seepage control systems, underdrainage systems, drainage systems, decant structures, spillways.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D software and MS Office Suite, MS Project, Primavera or other project management software.
  • Must have a valid manual Driver’s License.

Experience needed

Minimum of 4 years’ experience in mining project execution, with at least 2 years’ experience in the construction and delivery of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF), Water Storage Facilities (WSF), large earthworks, or major mine infrastructure projects.
