Overall Job Purpose
The role involves advising the environmental management team, advise middle management and employees on environmental management requirements, develop and implement procedures and management plans and liaison with government on environmental management performance and compliance requirements.
Responsibilities or duties
Specific Job Responsibility
- Schedule and conduct internal inspections and audits of facilities coordinating closure of identified non compliances in line with the companies set objectives and targets.
- Schedule and conduct compliance audits of contractors and suppliers.
- Carry out environmental incident investigations and where potential pollution situations exist recommend appropriate actions to abate environmental impacts. Maintain a corrective action tracking system for closure of identified items.
- In liaison with the supervisor or Environmental Manager, effectively engage/liaise with stakeholders such as government inspectors, community members and contractors/suppliers.
- Conduct awareness activities to ensure effective communication of the Environmental Management System (EMS) to employees and contractors.
- Review and update the KML environmental legal register providing appropriate feedback to management.
- Coordinate statutory reporting and permit applications such as but not limited to bi – annual returns, Environmental Impact Assessments, permit renewals and compilation of reports required by regulatory bodies.
- Monitoring implementation of the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and coordination of Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) reporting activities.
- Facilitate for environmental emergency preparedness planning and response.
- Routinely review environmental monitoring data to ascertain levels of compliance.
- Conduct awareness campaigns to improve housekeeping and waste management.
- Perform any other duties assigned to by supervisor.
Job Specific Competencies
- Contribute to compliance with the Zambian Environmental Legal requirements, corporate commitments and international best practices.
- Must be able to demonstrate Environmental law and compliance requirements
- Environmental management in general
- Knowledge and experience with Environmental Management System (EMS).
Key Job Attributes
- Positive attitude is imperative.
- Technically competent and good leadership skills.
- Able to develop and encourage the team.
- Good interpersonal skills and able to create a good network with people within KML
- Must be environmental and safety conscious
- Must pay attention to detail
- Must be meticulous
Qualifications
- Full Grade twelve certificate.
- At least a Bachelor of Engineering/Science in Environmental Engineering or any relevant field and minimum of 3 years’ experience in environmental management. Maturity, hands-on attitude, self-supervision, team spirit and proactivity are key attributes for the job.
- A valid driving license is required.
- Must be Computer Literate
- All qualifications must be certified by ZAQA
Experience required to perform in this job
- At least 3 years’ experience in environmental management.
- Relevant experience in the mining industry
- Valid experience in the same field
