Background
Be That Girl (BTG) is a philanthropic organisation dedicated to helping adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) lead self-determined lives. We provide holistic support to AGYW from secondary education to post-secondary pathways, focusing on scholarships, mentoring, skills training, and community-based support systems.
BTG is opening a Pathway Centre in Lusaka to help young women who have completed secondary education with BTG support successfully transition into post-secondary pathways. The Centre will equip them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to enter into one or more of the 3 Es: Entrepreneurship, higher Education and Employment.
Coaching is central to the vision of the Centre to empower young women to succeed post-secondary. With this in mind, we are looking for a passionate Senior Coach who will accompany our participants on a journey of self-discovery to identify their goals and plan next steps to realise them, as well as train them in work-readiness skills and help them access internships.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to play a pivotal role in shaping a new initiative with strong growth prospects and its impact in helping women lead self-determined lives.
Purpose of the Role
The Senior Coach will coach young women who have recently completed Grade Twelve with BTG support on goal setting, career mapping and planning, ensuring each participant creates a personal plan with detailed application strategies, internship goals, and next-step planning, as well as a professional CV.
The Senior Coach will help design and will personally deliver work-readiness training to young women to equip them with the skills they need to access quality post-secondary opportunities, and help identify and match them with internship opportunities.
The Senior Coach will also train teachers in secondary schools where BTG supports scholars to provide career orientation and guidance to students in grades 8-12, and will support execution and monitoring of in-school activities.
Key Responsibilities
Participant-facing with secondary school graduates
- Provide 1:1 and in group coaching to enhance employability and personal development.
- Provide in group training on work-readiness skills to groups of 20-40 young women. The curriculum will focus on growth mindset, working in team, client orientation, workplace etiquette and other basic foundational skills.
- Conduct skills assessments and career mapping with each participant to match them with internships.
- Provide support and advice to encourage learners, ensuring they progress in the course.
- Ensure inclusive participation of all learners.
- Proactively keep the contents of the work-readiness training up to date with job market and participants’ needs.
Participant-facing with secondary school teachers and students
- Train secondary school teachers in coaching techniques, helping them become “teachers/mentors” who go beyond teaching subjects and can guide learners on subject choices, career planning and studying techniques.
- Monitor and report on teacher/mentors performance.
- Participate in delivering career orientation events with inspiring role models in schools.
- Lead on the organisation of tours of the Pathway Centre for students in grades 8-12.
- Assist the Pathway Centre Manager in designing and delivering holiday boot camps for secondary school students in grades 8-12 on career orientation during school holidays.
Internal
- Support Pathway Centre Manager in developing a work-readiness curriculum that empowers young women with in-demand, highly transferrable skills to succeed in a variety of sectors.
- Support Pathway Centre Manager in identifying and nurturing extensive network of companies that can offer internships to the Centre’s participants.
- Support Pathway Centre Manager in networking and partnering with tertiary education institutions.
- Supervise other coaches at the Centre as needed.
- Support the Pathway Centre Manager in coordinating key Pathway Centre activities and events.
- Track and report on learners’ onboarding and progress.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- University degree in Education or related social science field.
- Recognised certification in Career Counselling or Coaching.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in career coaching, counselling, and/or youth development.
- High digital literacy (to use online onboarding and reporting tools).
Desirable
- Experience working with disadvantaged youth.
- Experience supervising a small team.
Required Skills
- High level of maturity, emotional intelligence and empathy
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills
- Knowledge of labour market trends in Zambia.
- Excellent networking and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Reporting and monitoring skills.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding.
- Growth mindset with high ownership of tasks.
