Background
The Consultant Surgeon at International Hospitals Zambia (IHZ) is a senior medical leadership position responsible for providing expert surgical consultation, diagnosis, and treatment for complex conditions.
This role demands advanced surgical skills across a specific specialty (e.g., General, Orthopedic, Neuro, etc),
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Expertise and Surgical Procedures
- Consultation and Diagnosis: Conduct detailed consultations and physical examinations, utilizing advanced diagnostic techniques to evaluate complex surgical cases and determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
- Surgical Interventions: Perform advanced and specialized surgical procedures across the consultant's specialty, utilizing both open and minimally invasive techniques, ensuring optimal outcomes and patient safety.
- Preoperative Care Oversight: Oversee comprehensive patient management before surgery, ensuring all risks are assessed, informed consent is obtained, and the surgical team is fully prepared.
- Postoperative Management: Provide expert post-operative care, manage complications, conduct regular ward rounds, and coordinate rehabilitation plans with multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent medical degree.
- Master of Medicine (MMed) in a surgical specialty (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery) or equivalent specialist qualification (e.g., Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa - FACS/ECSA).
Registration & Licensing:
- Must possess full registration and a valid specialist practicing license from the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience as a specialist surgeon post-qualification, with a proven track record of successful surgical outcomes and clinical leadership.
