About the Role: Environmental Officer Waste Management Jobs Kalumbila
Barrick Lumwana Mining Corporation is seeking a dedicated and highly motivated Environmental Officer specializing in waste management to join our Environmental team in Kalumbila, North West Province, Zambia. This full-time role offers an excellent opportunity for professionals passionate about sustainable environmental practices and regulatory compliance to contribute meaningfully to our operations.
Reporting directly to the Senior Environmental Officer, you will lead the implementation of effective waste management systems across the site. Your responsibilities will align with Barrick’s corporate waste management policies, ISO 14001 standards, and the Lumwana Mining Company’s Environmental Management System (EMS). This role is pivotal in promoting best environmental practices and ensuring compliance with Zambian regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee solid, hazardous, and medical waste management operations on site.
- Develop, implement, and maintain the Waste Management Plan, ensuring legal compliance and incorporation of best practices.
- Ensure proper segregation, collection, transportation, storage, and disposal of waste in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Supervise contractors managing waste collection, treatment, and disposal to guarantee environmental compliance and quality service.
- Monitor waste generation trends and prepare detailed reports on quantities, types, and disposal methods.
- Identify and implement waste minimization strategies such as reduce, reuse, and recycle initiatives across departments.
- Maintain accurate waste tracking systems and ensure timely reporting within EMS and other platforms.
- Coordinate waste audits and support external regulatory inspections as required.
- Develop and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to waste management activities.
- Conduct awareness campaigns and training sessions on site-wide waste management practices.
- Liaise with local authorities, regulators, and community stakeholders on waste-related matters.
- Investigate waste-related incidents, enforce corrective actions, and maintain comprehensive records of all waste activities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Full Grade 12 Certificate.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of three years post-qualification experience in waste management, preferably within mining, industrial, or heavy manufacturing sectors.
- Proven knowledge and application of ISO 14001 EMS, waste classification methodologies, and international best practices in industrial and hazardous waste management.
- Experience managing third-party waste contractors and engaging with regulatory authorities on compliance matters.
- Strong understanding of environmental and waste management legislation, including hazardous waste regulations.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and environmental reporting/data management systems.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to engage stakeholders effectively.
- High professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to environmental stewardship and continuous improvement.
