POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly competent, disciplined, and experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our mining and earthmoving operations team. The successful candidate must be capable of independently diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining heavy mining and earthmoving equipment operating in demanding field and mine site environments. This role requires a hands-on mechanic with strong technical expertise in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, drivetrain components, electrical fault finding, preventative maintenance, and heavy equipment diagnostics. The candidate must be technically strong, safety conscious, organized, reliable, and capable of maintaining high equipment availability and operational uptime under pressure. The successful applicant will be expected to attend to both workshop and field breakdowns, complete detailed maintenance reporting, and ensure all maintenance activities are performed according to company and client safety standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

MACHINE MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS

  • Diagnose and repair faults on heavy mining and earthmoving equipment.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing.
  • Perform engine, transmission, hydraulic, brake, suspension, and electrical repairs.
  • Carry out breakdown repairs in workshop and field conditions.
  • Ensure machines are maintained to high operational and safety standards.
  • Conduct inspections and identify potential mechanical failures before major breakdowns occur.
  • Maintain high machine availability and minimize downtime.

EQUIPMENT & SYSTEMS EXPERIENCE

Applicants must have proven experience working on one or more of the following:

  • Bell ADTs (B30 / B40 D & E Series)
  • Excavators
  • Front End Loaders
  • Bull Dozers
  • Graders
  • Water Bowsers
  • Tipper Trucks
  • Rollers and Compactors
  • Diesel engines
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Drivetrain systems
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Heavy-duty electrical systems

Experience working on Bell Equipment, Caterpillar, Volvo, or equivalent OEM equipment will be a strong advantage.

FIELD SERVICE & BREAKDOWN RESPONSE

  • Attend to field breakdowns and emergency repairs on operational sites.
  • Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics using OEM diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Ensure breakdowns are resolved efficiently to minimize operational disruption.
  • Liaise with operators and supervisors regarding machine performance issues.
  • Maintain proper communication with Head Office regarding machine condition and repair requirements.

REPORTING & ADMINISTRATION

  • Complete accurate service reports and breakdown reports.
  • Maintain maintenance records and workshop documentation.
  • Record parts usage, consumables, and repair activities.
  • Assist with maintenance planning and preventative maintenance scheduling.
  • Report major failures, recurring issues, and operational concerns to management.

RESOURCE & TOOL CONTROL

  • Ensure proper accountability of tools, workshop equipment, and company property.
  • Maintain clean and organized workshop and work areas.
  • Monitor consumables and assist with parts planning requirements.
  • Ensure correct usage and care of workshop tools and diagnostic equipment.

COMPLIANCE & SAFETY

  • Ensure compliance with company HSE standards and mine site safety procedures.
  • Enforce safe maintenance and repair practices at all times.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and workshop safety controls.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and operational discipline.
  • Ensure lockout and isolation procedures are properly followed where required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Trade Certificate / Craft Certificate / Degree in:
    • Heavy Equipment Repair.
    • Diesel Mechanics.
    • Earthmoving Equipment Maintenance.
    • Mechanical Engineering.
    • Or related field
  • Additional OEM technical training certifications will be an added advantage.
  • Experience will be considered an added advantage.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5+ years proven experience in:
    • Heavy equipment maintenance
    • Mining equipment repairs
    • Earthmoving equipment servicing
    • Hydraulic and diesel systems
    • Field service operations
  • Demonstrated experience working on multiple heavy earthmoving machines and mining equipment.
  • Strong understanding of preventative maintenance systems and machine diagnostics.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Diesel engine systems
    • Hydraulic systems
    • Drivetrain systems
    • Electrical fault finding
    • Preventative maintenance
    • Heavy equipment diagnostics
  • Ability to interpret service manuals and technical documentation.
  • Computer literate and proficient in:
    • Microsoft Excel

    • Digital reporting systems

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Driver’s Licence – Mandatory.
  • Must be willing to work on remote project and mine sites.
  • Strong discipline and work ethic.
  • High level of accountability and integrity.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work extended hours when operationally required.
  • Good communication and reporting skills.
