Job Purpose:
The Laboratory Assistant in Anatomy Laboratory provides essential support in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the laboratory. This role involves handling anatomical specimens, assisting in preparing laboratory materials, ensuring proper waste disposal, and assisting faculty, students, and technicians during practical sessions.
Main Duties and Accountabilities:
- Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of the laboratory, including dissection tables, floors, and workstations;
- Regularly clean and disinfect laboratory surfaces, sinks, and equipment;
- Assist in cleaning and sterilizing dissection tools, trays, and glassware;
- Dispose of biohazardous waste, such as tissues and preservative chemicals, following safety regulations;
- Assist in the proper storage of cadavers and anatomical specimens;
- Ensure cadaveric materials and teaching models are stored securely and safely;
- Maintain proper labeling and arrangement of specimens;
- Assist in setting up practical sessions by preparing models, cadavers, and dissection tools;
- Support faculty and laboratory technicians during anatomy practical sessions;
- Arrange chairs, tables, and other necessary materials for laboratory activities;
- Help ushering students in and out of anatomy laboratory during practical examinations;
- Follow all safety protocols when handling chemicals and biological specimens;
- Assist in enforcing safety rules for students and staff in the laboratory;
- Report any safety hazards, spills, or accidents to the supervisor immediately; and
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 or Form V Certificate (or its equivalent) with 5 “0” levels including English Language and Mathematics;
- Certificate in Science Laboratory Technology/ Biomedical Sciences;
- Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology/ Biomedical Sciences will be an added advantage;
- Prior experience working in a laboratory, hospital or educational institution will be added advantage;
- Familiarity with laboratory cleaning, dissection tools and specimen handling; and
- Willingness to work with cadavers is essential.
Required Competencies and Behavioral Attributes:
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to laboratory safety Strong communication skills.
- Maintains high standards of cleanliness, accurate specimen labeling, orderly storage, correct setup of practical sessions, and consistent adherence to established procedures;
- Efficiently supports laboratory operations;
- Works cooperatively with School, Technicians and Students;
- Acts reliably and ethically;
- Good interpersonal skills; and
- Must be computer literate.
Reporting Relationships:
- Immediate Supervisor: Laboratory Technician
- Salary Scale: PSS10
