The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ) is a statutory body established under the Nurses and Midwives Act No. 10 of 2019. The Council is mandated to regulate nursing and midwifery education, training, and practice in Zambia to ensure safe, competent, and professional nursing and midwifery care to the public.

Reporting to Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will provide legal and corporate governance services to the Board and Council committees in order to safeguard the interests of the Council.

Responsibilities or duties

  • Provides comprehensively expert legal opinion on Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding and Contracts in order to ensure the Council’s interests are protected and actual obligations are met.
  • Undertakes effectively the representation of the Council in Courts of law and quasi-judicial bodies in order to safeguard the Council’s legal standing.
  • Undertakes timely the provision of secretariat services to the Board and Council committees in order to facilitate efficient conduct of Board business, communication, organization and coordination of Board activities.
  • Oversees effectively the conduct of investigations into complaints in order to facilitate informed decision making.
  • Oversees effectively the drafting and review of legal documents in order to safeguard the interests of the Authority and ensure compliance with the law.
  • Undertakes effectively the interpretation of the Nurses and Midwives Act and other relevant statutes in order to provide authoritative guidance to the Board and Management.

Qualifications or requirements

  • Full Form V or Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree.
  • Advocate of the High Court of Zambia.
  • Member of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ).
  • Able to communicate effectively in English and write technical and analytical reports.

Experience needed

  • At least 4 years’ experience at the Bar, with 2 years at Senior Management level.

  • Integrity, independence and objectivity.
