Position: Senior Laboratory Technician – Chemical Engineering (x1)
Job Purpose:
To provide technical support in research, development, production and quality control processes and to ensure efficient and safe chemical engineering laboratory operations.
Main Duties and Accountabilities:
- Design, set up and conduct chemical experiments and tests to support product development research or process optimization;
- Monitor chemical processes and analyse substances to ensure compliance with specifications and standards;
- Maintain, calibrate and sterilise laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure accuracy and safety;
- Planning and demonstrating laboratory practicals to undergraduate students;
- Prepare and standardise chemical solutions and reagents;
- Assist in scaling up laboratory processes to industrial production, ensuring efficiency and quality;
- Diagnose, coordinate repairs and resolve technical issues in chemical processes or equipment, utilizing root cause analysis (RCA) and data driven decisions;
- Implement process improvements to enhance safety, reduce costs and minimise environmental impact;
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols such as OSHA PSM standards and environmental regulations (e.g. EPA guidelines);
- Conduct safety audits, risk assessments and hazardous material handling training;
- Prepare technical reports, graphs and charts to document experimental results and present findings to Stakeholders;
- Maintain and manage accurate records of inventory, chemical usage and compliance documentation following good documentation practices such as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS);
- Supervise and train Technicians, providing guidance on technical procedures and safety practices;
- Coordinate and collaborate with cross functional teams to achieve goals or development; and
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 or Form V Certificate (or its equivalent) with 5 “0” levels including English Language and Mathematics;
- Bachelor’ Degree in Chemical/ Biochemical Engineering.
- Minimum of (2) years’ relevant practical experience in a process industry or research/ analytical laboratory environment; and
- Professional Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia.
Required Competencies and Behavioral Attributes:
- Proficiency in various software for data analysis and laboratory information systems;
- Sound understanding of the matter;
- A growth mind set and excellent networking abilities;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team;
- Strong communication skills; and
- Good interpersonal skills.

- Immediate Supervisor: Head of Department
- Salary Scale: PSS06
