Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly motivated and committed employee for the position of Customs Compliance Specialist to join the versatile Government Relations Team. We are in search of individuals who can champion Barrick’s DNA by:

Reporting to the Regulatory Affairs Manager, you will be responsible for supporting the Company’s customs and international trade compliance function, ensuring full compliance with all customs, import, export, and trade-related regulatory requirements applicable to Lumwana Mining Company Limited.
Responsibilities or duties
Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Review customs declarations and supporting documentation monthly to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
- Verify tariff classifications, customs values, duty treatments, and incentive eligibility for imported and exported items monthly.
- Identify, assess, and monitor customs compliance risks across the business and support the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures.
- Investigate customs compliance incidents, identify root causes, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor customs compliance performance indicators and recommend opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency.
- Support customs planning and compliance requirements for major capital projects, project cargo, equipment imports, and operational requirements.
- Support the administration and monitoring of customs incentives, including Authorized Public Concession (APC) approvals, duty exemptions, suspensions, rebates, VAT deferment arrangements, and other available incentive schemes.
- Maintain accurate records of customs authorizations, permits, rulings, approvals, exemptions, and regulatory correspondence.
- Ensure customs transactions are appropriately processed and reconciled within ASYCUDA World, Smart Invoicing, SAP and other relevant systems.
- Prepare regular customs compliance reports for management, highlighting key risks, trends, opportunities, and areas requiring attention.
- Support preparation of documentation required for customs audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews
- Provide technical guidance to internal stakeholders on customs requirements, tariff classification, customs valuation, rules of origin, duty treatment, temporary importation regimes, and import/export procedures.
- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of customs compliance frameworks, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting customs and international trade and assess their impact on Company operations.
- Maintain strong working relationships with the Zambia Revenue Authority Customs Division and other relevant Government agencies.
- Coordinate responses to customs queries, assessments, rulings, information requests, and regulatory reviews.
- Support broader regulatory engagement initiatives led by the Regulatory Affairs Manager.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following:
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Logistics, International Trade, Law, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field
- Strong knowledge of Zambia Revenue Authority customs procedures, tariff classifications, duty treatments, rules of origin, and applicable international trade requirements.
- Strong understanding of regulatory compliance and risk management in the mining sector.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
- Effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- High level of integrity and professional judgement.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Experience needed
- Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience in customs compliance, customs operations, international trade, freight forwarding, logistics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience managing customs audits, customs incentives, duty exemptions, temporary imports, import/export compliance matters, and regulatory engagements.
- Extensive practical experience working with ASYCUDA World, Smart Invoicing, and other customs management systems.
- Experience within the mining, energy, and manufacturing sectors will be a distinct advantage
