The Instrumentation Superintendent holds overall responsibility for managing and directing all field instrumentation activities for the Lumwana Expansion Project. This senior role ensures that all installations, calibrations, loop checks, and commissioning activities are executed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance, in accordance with SANS requirements, OEM specifications, and project engineering deliverables. Acting as the technical authority and primary point of coordination, the Superintendent drives strategic planning, cross-discipline collaboration, and resource management to deliver world-class instrumentation works on time and within budget.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Certification:

Grade 12 Certificate with Mathematics and Science.
Red Seal Trade Test Certificate in Instrumentation (Section 13 or Section 26D) – South Africa.
Registration or eligibility for registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) advantageous.
Experience:

Minimum 8 years’ industrial instrumentation experience (mining, processing, petrochemical), with at least 3 years in a superintendent or senior supervisory capacity.
Proven track record in:
Smart and conventional instrumentation systems.
Fieldbus and 4–20 mA loop systems.
PLC and DCS interface management.
Hazardous area installations (Ex d, Ex i, etc.).
Working knowledge of SANS 10142-1, SANS 60079, and OEM specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership for all field instrumentation activities, ensuring alignment with project milestones, cost controls, and safety objectives.
Approve and oversee installation of field instruments (flow, pressure, level, temperature, etc.) in compliance with SANS standards and engineering design.
Manage and allocate resources, including instrumentation teams, subcontractors, tools, and equipment, to optimise productivity and quality.
Direct installation, calibration, loop checking, functional testing, and final commissioning activities, ensuring readiness for system handover.
Serve as the technical authority for hazardous area works, ensuring full compliance with SANS 60079 (Explosive Atmospheres) and statutory requirements.
Conduct and sign off quality inspections, FAT/SAT results, and commissioning documentation.
Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and automation teams to integrate instrumentation systems seamlessly.
Interpret and validate P&IDs, loop diagrams, instrument index, cable schedules, and I/O lists.
Enforce strict compliance with permit-to-work systems, risk assessments, and safety protocols.
Maintain detailed progress tracking, punch lists, as-built records, and QA/QC documentation.
Develop and mentor artisans, technicians, and junior engineers to elevate technical capabilities and safety culture.
Provide daily progress reports, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to project leadership.

Skills & Competencies

Expert knowledge of instrumentation standards, hazardous area compliance, and control system integration.
Advanced ability to interpret and validate engineering documentation.
Strong leadership, planning, and conflict-resolution skills.
Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Proficiency with calibration tools, HART communicators, and process simulators.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in English.
Computer literacy in MS Office and instrumentation databases.

Working Conditions

Site-based position at a remote mining project location.
May require working at heights, in confined spaces, or in hazardous environments.
Exposure to noise, dust, and extreme weather conditions.
Extended working hours or shift work to meet project deadlines.
