Overall Responsibility

The Refrigeration Technician will be responsible for installing and commissioning refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, carrying out preventive maintenance, diagnosing and repairing faults, managing refrigerants, troubleshooting electrical and control systems, monitoring equipment performance and efficiency, responding to breakdowns, maintaining safety and compliance, and completing relevant documentation and reports.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Production Engineering.
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Grade Twelve (12) Certificate.
  • Membership with the relevant professional body.
  • All academic qualifications must be certified by ZAQA.

  • Refrigeration Cycle and System Components.
  • Electrical Controls and Wiring.
  • Fault Diagnosis and Troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities

Installation and Commissioning

  • Install refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, equipment, and components according to specifications.
  • Connect electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration components.
  • Conduct system testing and commissioning to ensure proper operation.
  • Ensure installations comply with technical and safety standards.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Carry out scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance of refrigeration equipment.
  • Clean, inspect, and service compressors, condensers, evaporators, filters, fans, and other components.
  • Check refrigerant levels, pressures, temperatures, and electrical connections.
  • Identify potential faults before they result in equipment breakdown.

Fault Diagnosis and Repairs

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration system faults.
  • Repair or replace defective components and equipment.
  • Investigate causes of system failures and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Test repaired equipment to confirm that it is operating safely and efficiently.

Refrigerant Management

  • Recover, handle, store, and charge refrigerants safely and responsibly.
  • Detect and repair refrigerant leaks.
  • Maintain accurate records of refrigerant usage and servicing.
  • Follow environmental regulations and safe refrigerant-handling practices.

Electrical and Control Systems

  • Inspect and troubleshoot electrical circuits, wiring, switches, relays, thermostats, sensors, and control systems.
  • Test electrical components using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair or replace faulty electrical and control components where qualified to do so.

Equipment Performance and Efficiency

  • Monitor refrigeration systems to ensure optimum performance.
  • Check operating pressures, temperatures, energy consumption, and system efficiency.
  • Make adjustments and recommendations to improve equipment performance and reduce energy consumption.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow occupational health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
