Conducting survey on giving patterns in peri-urban and rural communities in Zambia

⦁ Background
The Zambian Governance Foundation (ZGF) is dedicated to strengthening local communities and civil society capacities for sustainable development. Our mission focuses on leveraging both available and untapped resources, fostering community-led development ethos, and promoting the core principles of the Shift the Power movement. Through active engagement with various stakeholders, ZGF advocates for investment in local communities and civil society organisations (CSO) initiatives, and increased community awareness about climate change and its impacts.

Over the years, ZGF has worked in peri-urban neighbourhoods in Lusaka and in rural districts such as Chisamba, Chibombo, Luangwa and Rufunsa, with a focus on community-led development, environmental sustainability, and grassroots philanthropy. These engagements have demonstrated that communities, despite limited external resources, consistently mobilise their own assets, knowledge, time, labour, and financial contributions, to support one another in times of need.

To deepen its understanding of these local giving patterns, ZGF, in collaboration with Giving Tuesday Zambia, initiated a pilot survey in Chainda, a peri-urban neighbourhood in Lusaka. The findings indicated the presence of acts of generosity and mutual aid. These insights highlighted the importance of recognising and strengthening informal systems of giving that often operate outside the traditional philanthropic frameworks.

Building on this momentum, ZGF aims to conduct a follow-up survey in Chawama, George, Nyankanga in Chisamba district and Masebela in Chibombo district, to document and compare giving practices across different geographic and socio-economic settings.

To aid with the survey, ZGF is seeking a qualified consultant to lead in the fieldwork, manage data collection processes and compile a comprehensive dataset and analysis from the four communities.
