Our Opportunity

We are looking for an accomplished Exploration Manager with a minimum of 15 years’ hands-on experience in the Central African Copperbelt.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the development and execution of our greenfields and brownfields copper exploration projects.

This position requires a deep geological understanding of the Copperbelt, exploration techniques, logistics, safety protocols, legal frameworks, and commercial transactions within the Zambian mining industry.
The position will be a residential Zambia-based.
Key Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and expertise in geological exploration, target generation, and resource estimation to guide the exploration team effectively
• Exploration Strategy: Develop and implement comprehensive exploration strategies, ensuring alignment with project goals and company objectives.
• Project Management: Oversee all aspects of exploration work programs, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution, while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards and environmental regulations.
• Logistics and Operations: Manage logistical challenges associated with exploration activities, ensuring timely procurement of necessary equipment, tools, and resources to support efficient field operations.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Foster positive relationships with local communities, government authorities, and relevant industry stakeholders to promote smooth project development and regulatory compliance.
• Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Utilize an in-depth understanding of the Zambian mining act and legal framework to ensure exploration activities and the reporting thereof are conducted in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
• Commercial Transactions: Provide expertise in identifying potential projects and negotiating and managing legal and commercial agreements related to exploration activities, joint ventures, and other partnerships.
• Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary exploration team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Collaboration: Build and maintain a strong collaborative culture with Fortescue’s technical, legal, and other corporate teams in Australia
• Reporting and Documentation: Prepare regulatory as well as comprehensive technical reports, presentations, and updates to communicate exploration progress, findings, and potential resource estimates to internal and external stakeholders.
• Health, Safety, and Environmental Standards: Champion a safety-first culture, implement best practices to mitigate operational risks, and ensure all exploration activities are conducted with minimal environmental impact.
• Resident Expertise: Leverage your residency in Zambia to maintain a strong local presence, facilitating effective communication with local teams and stakeholders as well as license holders of suitable ground to add to Fortescue’s portfolio through commercial transactions.
Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Geology or related field.
• Minimum of 15 years’ experience in geological exploration within the Central African Copperbelt (ideally both Zambia and DRC).
• Extensive experience in managing exploration work programs, including logistical planning and adherence to safety protocols.
• In-depth understanding of the Zambian mining act, legal framework, and commercial transactions related to mining activities.
• Strong leadership skills and proven ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Proficiency in relevant geological software and exploration tools.
• Fluent in English; additional local languages and French are a plus.
• Resident of Zambia.
