Background

Zambia Sugar Plc is an ABF Sugar Company and the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Our core business is growing sugar cane, producing high-quality sugar, and creating value through a range of downstream products.

The company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced people to fill the Safety Spotter role on Fixed Term Contract (FTC) basis at Project Twazabuka. The successful candidate will support the project in all SHERQ activities and will report to the SHERQ Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Record any unsafe acts and conditions noticed during the daily patrols of the work areas and report to the project management and SHERQ team.
  • Conduct regular health and safety inspections, i.e. Daily Safety Inspections (DSI), and near miss reporting exercises to mitigate workplace risks.
  • Lead in Planned Task Observations (PTOs) and Critical Control Verification (CCV) programs for 9 Critical Life Saving (CLS) Rules to enhance operational discipline and accountability.
  • Assess and review Contractors’ Safety File and ensure compliance: method statements, risk assessments, safe work procedures, and HSE programs tailored to project-specific requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement through accident prevention initiatives and behaviour-based safety campaigns.
  • Effectively communicating to all employees, stakeholders, and contractors, on their individuals’ responsibilities and roles in maintaining the commitments of Zambia Sugar’s SHERQ policy.
  • Facilitate HSE training, toolbox talks, and behavioural based safety awareness sessions to strengthen workforce safety culture.
  • Ensure practicality and alignment of the ABF Integrated Risk Management System (IRMS) through the Group Level Guidelines (GLG) into site Level Procedures to ensure operational effectiveness.
  • Good interpersonal skills using constructive and logical approaches.
  • Availability to work flexible hours and respond to emergencies
  • Promote and enforce ABFS policies: SHERQ & Food Safety, Competition Law, and Anti-Bribery & Corruption (ABC).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent.
  • Diploma in Occupation Health and Safety or equivalent. Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent from a reputable institution will be highly regarded.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate (added advantage).
  • Member of ZOHSA, HPCZ or Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ safety experience within agribusiness, manufacturing construction or mining industry.
  • Sound business acumen in project management with ability to anticipate and interpret changes impacting on health and safety programs and approaches.
  • Knowledge of OHS&E systems, preferably ISO 45001 and ISO14001 management systems.
  • Qualifications verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
