Background

Zambia Sugar Plc is an ABF Group sugar company and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.

Zambia Sugar carries out Off-Crop maintenance works in the Factory for a duration of up to four (4) months and invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill Off-Crop positions in the Manufacturing Department.

Overall Responsibility

The position reports to the Lead Artisan – Fire & Lifting. The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting maintenance works to achieve maximum plant availability and equipment capacity, ensuring compliance with minimum operating standards and/or work instructions.

Key Performance Areas

  • Implement the “ABF Way of Maintenance” (iAMP) in rigging equipment and works to ensure ABF is the world class sugar producer.
  • Compliance to minimum rigging standards.
  • Implement preventative/reactive maintenance initiatives and plans to maintain safety standards, reduce costs and downtime.
  • Promote cross-functional and stakeholder engagement and teamwork.
  • Model behaviours, collaborating, partnering and communicating effectively within and between teams and customer functions (process).
  • Ensure workshop and plant housekeeping is in line with the 5S standard and show that no job is complete until the work area is cleaned and all safety equipment is reinstated.
  • Inspect, check and repair lifting equipment, scaffolding and ladders according to scheduled maintenance programme and OHS Act.
  • Record and sign results in appropriate NOSA record books.
  • Colour code lifting equipment according to three monthly schedules as per ABF Sugar Standard.
  • Check, inspect and replace wire ropes on all Hilo spillers, cranes and record findings in rope record book.
  • Select lifting tackle according to safe working load to lift, move and install machinery and equipment without supervision.
  • Erect scaffolding, platforms, chairs and ladders and assist with work in elevated positions.
  • Assist with stripping and assembly of mills and other heavy machinery.
  • Assist Boilermakers/Welders to move welding machines and equipment within the factory areas.
  • Provide rigging services to other company sections without supervision.
  • Lift, move and install machinery up to 18 tons with cranes, chain blocks, tirfors and winches.
  • Test proof chain blocks and all rigging equipment and sign results in appropriate NOSA record book yearly.
  • Climb structures to attach slings, chain blocks, shackles and holding to hang necessary lifting equipment.
  • Splice wire and hemp rope and make up slings.
  • Assist in rigging, cutting, stripping and applying glue splicing for rubber belt conveyor joints.
  • Grease overhead cranes, winch wires and Hilo off-loaders.
  • Visually check bolts on cranes and tighten loose bolts.
  • Drive and operate all overhead cranes.
  • Upon completion of repairs, ensure that equipment is in good operating condition and maintain 5S.
  • Ensure the Job Plan / Checklist on the WO is diligently followed as per the work-order tasks.
  • Contribute to the RCA process.
  • Ensure that all documents reach intended offices for onward processing.
  • Work to the highest standards of safety, follow safe work rules and not permit any unsafe acts.
  • Promote and adhere to ABF’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Certificate in Rigging.
  • 2+ years post experience in a heavy industry environment in a similar role.
  • Mechanical fitting experience is an added advantage.
