Job Purpose:
The Assistant Construction Engineer supports the planning, coordination, and supervision of solar minigrid works, including fencing, powerhouse construction, powerplant wiring, distribution network construction, and home wiring, such that they are executed according to the design, quality standards, and timeline. This role ensures that materials, tools, labor, and accommodation are in place and that minor problems are solved without escalating to the Construction Engineer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist supervising day-to-day solar mini-grid works.
- Monitor site activities to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications.
- Support coordination of contractors and laborers on-site.
- Track daily progress and escalate delays or issues.
- Support surveying activities and basic measurements.
- Report defects and assist in implementing corrective actions.
- Monitor curing, compaction, and finishing of civil works.
- Enforce adherence to safety procedures and PPE usage on-site.
- Participate in site risk assessments and safety briefings.
- Identify and report hazards or unsafe practices.
- Liaise with electrical teams to align civil and electrical activities.
- Assist in scheduling and coordinating construction tasks.
- Support logistics for materials delivery and storage.
- Maintain site records including daily logs, material usage, workforce attendance and assist in preparing progress reports and site updates
- Provide basic technical guidance to site workers.
- Assist the Civil Engineer in resolving minor technical challenges.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma in engineering or another technical field
- Minimum 1–3 years of experience in construction or infrastructure projects.
- Experience in solar minigrids or rural electrification is an added advantage.
- Basic knowledge of construction methods, materials, and site practices.
- Experience with Geographical Information Systems (Google Earth and QGIS) is an added advantage.
Languages:
- Excellent oral and written English required.
- Proficiency in at least one local Zambian language; language from NW Province is an added advantage.
