Position Summary:
The Finance Officer will be responsible for managing day-to-day financial operations, maintaining accurate accounting records, and ensuring strict compliance with regulatory frameworks. Distinctively, this role entails managing the unique cash flow cycles associated with agricultural lending (such as seasonal disbursements and bullet repayments), tracking agribusiness revolving funds, and monitoring credit risk profiles peculiar to small-scale agricultural producers and cooperatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Accounting & Reconciliation
- Maintain and update the general ledger using specialized Microfinance Core Banking Systems (CBS) and accounting software.
- Perform daily and monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, mobile money wallets, and digital agency banking transaction points.
- Reconcile loan disbursement accounts against approved agribusiness loan schedules.
2. Agribusiness Portfolio & Cash Flow Management
- Monitor the cash flow requirements of the institution, ensuring adequate liquidity for high-volume, seasonal crop and livestock input loan disbursements.
- Track and manage specific Agribusiness Revolving Funds or donor-funded agricultural lines of credit.
- Analyze repayment patterns against harvest cycles to provide early warning signals on portfolio quality (Portfolio at Risk – PAR).
3. Treasury & Funds Management
- Supervise daily cash handling, and branch or agency liquidity levels.
- Process vendor payments, staff payroll, and statutory deductions ensuring timely settlement.
- Monitor interest income generated from agricultural credit facilities and compare against cost of funds.
4. Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow) in accordance with statutory banking regulations.
- Coordinate internal and external audit processes by preparing audit schedules and providing necessary documentation.
Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a closely related business field.
- Partial or full professional certification (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, CA, ZICA, CPA, or equivalent regional institute membership).
- Valid practicing certificate or registered membership with a national/regional professional accounting body is highly desirable.
Core Experience Requirements
- Microfinance Experience: A minimum of 3 to years of progressive accounting or finance experience strictly within a Microfinance Institution (MFI), Microfinance Bank, or a credit-focused financial services firm.
- Sector Exposure: Demonstrated experience working with agricultural loan products, cooperative financing, or rural lending schemes is highly preferred.
- System Knowledge: Hands-on proficiency with microfinance loan tracking systems, digital financial services (DFS) integration, and standard ERP systems.
