SUMMARY

The HIAB Driver/Operator is responsible for safely operating a HIAB truck-mounted crane and vehicle for the transportation, loading, unloading, lifting, and positioning of construction materials, equipment, poles, transformers, and other project assets required for the Overhead Power Line Construction Project. The role ensures all lifting and transportation activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project, client, and statutory requirements.

EDUCATION

Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of lifting operations and load charts Understanding of safe lifting practices and rigging principles Ability to inspect lifting equipment and accessories
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong safety awareness and risk identification skills Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid Class C or CE Driver’s Licence (or equivalent applicable licence) Valid HIAB Crane Operator Certification
  • Lifting Equipment Operator Certification is an added advantage Defensive Driving Certificate is an added advantage

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Vehicle Operation: Operate HIAB truck and associated lifting equipment safely and efficiently; Transport construction materials, equipment, and project resources to and from designated work sites; Conduct daily pre-start inspections and vehicle checks; Ensure compliance with road traffic regulations and mine site transport requirements; Maintain vehicle cleanliness and roadworthiness.

Crane Operations: Operate the HIAB crane for loading, unloading, and positioning of materials; Lift and place poles, transformers, cable drums, steel structures, and other project components; Assess lifting requirements and ensure safe load handling practices; Use appropriate lifting accessories and equipment; Ensure lifting operations comply with approved lifting plans and procedures.

Material Handling: Verify loads before transportation; Ensure proper securing of loads during transit; Assist with material movement and site logistics activities; Coordinate with riggers, banksmen, and site supervisors during lifting operations.

Equipment Inspection and Maintenance: Perform routine inspections of the HIAB crane, lifting gear, and vehicle; Report defects, breakdowns, or maintenance requirements immediately; Ensure inspection records and logbooks are accurately maintained; Monitor fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluid levels.
