Job Description

The Legal Counsel (AVP) role is responsible for providing proactive, commercially sound and regulator-aligned legal advisory services to the Bank, supporting sustainable growth while safeguarding against legal and regulatory risks. The role requires a strong understanding of banking products and transactions, with accountability for structuring, negotiating and drafting complex agreements, and ensuring all documentation is legally enforceable and aligned to the Bank’s risk appetite. It also involves translating legal strategy into practical business support, delivering within agreed timelines and contributing to a high-performance legal function.

A core component of the role is ensuring full compliance with applicable legal and regulatory frameworks, including banking legislation, Bank of Zambia directives, AML/CFT obligations, data protection and consumer protection laws. The Legal Counsel is expected to monitor regulatory developments, provide timely and defensible advice, and support regulatory engagement and reporting processes. This includes identifying and mitigating legal risks across business activities, integrating these into enterprise risk frameworks, and managing litigation in line with internal policies to protect the Bank’s interests.

The role also requires strong stakeholder management and technical expertise, with responsibility for working collaboratively across business units and jurisdictions, managing external counsel, and contributing to governance and control frameworks. The Legal Counsel must demonstrate sound judgement, uphold high ethical standards, and promote a strong compliance and conduct culture within the organisation, while continuously enhancing legal processes, knowledge sharing and best practice to strengthen the Bank’s overall control environment.
