Role Overview

One World Nature Conservation Alliance (OWNCA) is seeking a dynamic and strategic Pollution Control & Waste Management Coordinator to lead critical initiatives in combating environmental degradation.

This managerial role has a central mission: to oversee and drive programs that prevent pollution and promote sustainable waste management, thereby protecting the health of rivers, land, and air.

The successful candidate will be a leader, advocate, and practical problem-solver, responsible for transforming our environmental vision into tangible, impactful action.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Program Management

  • Develop and implement OWNCA’s strategic plan for pollution prevention and waste management across target regions.
  • Design, budget, and manage field programs addressing issues such as plastic waste, agricultural runoff, industrial discharge, and air quality.
  • Build and manage the program’s annual budget, ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively.

Technical Oversight & Environmental Protection

  • Rivers: Design and oversee projects to reduce pollution from mining, sanitation challenges, and plastic waste; promote river clean-ups and sustainable watershed management.
  • Land: Implement programs to combat illegal dumping, promote recycling and composting, and remediate contaminated sites. Advocate for circular economy principles.
  • Air: Lead air quality monitoring efforts in urban areas, identify major pollution sources, and develop mitigation strategies and advocacy campaigns.
  • Provide expert guidance on hazardous materials and waste management best practices.

Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy

  • Serve as OWNCA’s primary expert on pollution issues in engagements with government agencies, community leaders, and industry representatives.
  • Build strong partnerships with NGOs, CBOs, and private sector actors to amplify impact.
  • Lead advocacy and awareness campaigns to influence policy and promote community behavioral change.
  • Design and deliver educational workshops and materials.

Team Management & Capacity Building

  • Lead, mentor, and manage environmental officers and field staff.
  • Develop work plans, conduct performance reviews, and foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Identify training needs and strengthen technical capacity within OWNCA and local partners.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

  • Establish KPIs to measure success and impact of programs.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports for OWNCA leadership, board members, and donors.
  • Document activities and integrate lessons learned into future planning.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree is an added advantage).
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in pollution control, waste management, or environmental protection.
  • Demonstrated experience in project design, budgeting, and executive reporting.
  • Strong understanding of socio-economic and environmental challenges in Zambia.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, from rural communities to government officials.
