The Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the safe installation, calibration, and maintenance of field instrumentation and control systems in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. This role ensures optimal functionality of PLCs, SCADA, and network systems to support uninterrupted plant operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Installation & Commissioning

  • Install, test, and commission new instrumentation equipment (flow meters, pressure transmitters, control valves, etc.) with minimal production disruption.
  • Configure hardwired/networked devices (Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet) and integrate with PLC/SCADA systems (Siemens S7, Citect SCADA).
  • Implement control philosophies by coding parameters into PLCs and HMIs.

2. Calibration & Maintenance

  • Perform precision calibration of field instruments to ensure accuracy.
  • Execute preventive maintenance per scheduled plans.
  • Troubleshoot IGBT-controlled PWM drives and Siemens SIMOCODE systems.

3. Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to lockout-tagout (LOTO) and confined space/height work protocols.
  • Comply with Mines Safety RegulationsISO 9001/14001, and company HSE policies.
  • Report hazards and incidents via the company’s safety system.

4. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain logs of calibration recordsfault repairs, and equipment manuals.
  • Update SCADA/HMI displays with correct process parameters.

Required Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in PLC programming (Siemens S7/TIA Portal).
  • Hands-on experience with DCS/SCADA (Citect, WinCC) and fieldbus networks (Profibus, Modbus).
  • Ability to interpret P&IDsloop diagrams, and instrumentation schematics.

Behavioral Traits

  • Safety-first mindset – "Thinking Safely" as a core value.
  • Team player with collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail for precise calibrations and coding.

Qualifications & Experience

Mandatory

  • Grade 12 Certificate (ZAQA-verified).
  • Diploma/Certificate in Instrumentation & Control (EIZ-registered).
  • 3+ years in mining/plant instrumentation maintenance.

Preferred Experience

  • Siemens S7 PLCs and variable speed drives.
  • Citect SCADA configuration.
  • SIMOCODE motor management systems.

Work Conditions

  • Standby/overtime for emergency breakdowns.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, heights, and confined spaces.
  • PPE mandatory (arc flash gear, harnesses, respirators).
