Position summary:
The operations of the Librarian should be in accordance with the core value of the university and with sound library practice. He / She should be stationed in the e-Library room, where they can assist students / scholars / staff in accessing online resources. This position reports directly to the Vice-Principal, keeping him/her abreast of all planning, organizing, staff and development of EPIC library system.
Duties and Responsibilities
The principal duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
- Campus Engagement
- Establish effective and productive collaborative relationships with academic staff to ensure the library is kept abreast of plans and trends in teaching and research activities.
- Use and maintain computer library databases to help locate library materials for the students.
- Maintain library records and ensure it is updated.
- Represent the library, and contribute to relevant committees/meetings as appropriate.
- Encourage student, faculty and staff utilization of library facilities.
- Work to ensure that the University library meets the Higher Education Authority (HEA) standards.
- Collection Development and Management
- To strategically develop and assess Library’s collections in assigned subject areas in collaboration with academic schools to ensure collections (print, online and databases) are current and adequately reflect the teaching, learning and research needs.
- Participate in curriculum planning for the purpose of ordering and organizing library materials to enhance effectiveness of library facilities.
- To participate as appropriate in programme /module reviews and accreditation processes and provide support on library matters relating to information resources, services and information literacy skills development.
- Research Support
- To provide a one-to-one consultation service to research staff and students in assigned schools / research clusters.
- To deliver tailored classes and workshops as required and contribute to the library’s programme of workshops specifically designed for graduate students and researchers.
- Other
- To provide subject related consultation services to relevant staff and students.
- To assist with the provision of a high-quality reference service by participating in information desk reviews as and when required.
- Travel and work a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of various use groups and programs of the University Schools.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- A Master’s degree in a relevant academic discipline from a recognized institution.
- A minimum of three (3) years with Master’s Degree or five (5) years with Bachelor’s Degree experience in higher education institution.
- Knowledge of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) standards and Zambia Qualifications Framework (ZAQF).
Preferred Competencies and Skills
- Strong IT skills and familiarity with the use of databases and the internet
- Team working and management skills
- Assessment of resources and library users’ needs
- Presentation and verbal communication skills
- High level of planning and organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and passionate to conduct research
Terms of Appointment
Contract Type: Full-time
Duration: Initial 3-year renewable contract, subject to performance and institutional needs.
Remuneration: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
