1.0  Brief Project Background

The Eastern Kafue Nature Alliance Project (EKNA) is a five-year USAID-funded Cooperative Agreement which runs from 30th September 2021 to 29 September 2026. The purpose of the EKNA project is to improve the protection and management of wildlife, forests, and fisheries in the eastern Kafue landscape and increase incomes and wellbeing of local communities by addressing constraints to the development of inclusive agriculture and ecosystem-based markets. Working with public, private, and civil society actors to strengthen markets and resource protection systems, and improve community rights, governance, and capacity, the EKNA partners seek to create an enabling environment for increased private sector investment that can drive poverty reduction, improve nature-based incomes, and direct more resources towards human well-being.

The project was developed from 2020 to 2021, through a USAID-led co-creation process that engaged The Nature Conservancy (TNC), local non-government organizations (NGOs), local and international enterprises (Kashikoto Conservancy Ltd. and Amatheon Agri Zambia (AAZ)), and representatives of civil society organizations active in Zambia’s Greater Kafue Landscape (GKL). TNC, Kashikoto, AAZ, and USAID formed a Global Development Alliance (GDA) to pursue landscape-level results for biodiversity conservation, economic prosperity, human well-being, and improved governance in the eastern area of the GKL. The goal of the activity is to address the direct and indirect causes or drivers of biodiversity loss, such as deforestation, land conversion, and ecosystem degradation in the eastern Kafue landscape. The project supports the development and strengthening of community resource management governance structures, the enhancement of community tenure and rights over natural resources and the use of these rights to facilitate the private sector investments and development of a ‘conservation economy’ in this critically important landscape, along with investments in maternal and child health, and provision of clean water.

The EKNA project is implemented under four interrelated Strategic Approaches (SAs) in the eastern GKL as follows:

• SA1. Strengthen natural resource compliance and management systems in protected areas and other community conservation areas for more integrated protection and management of wildlife, forests, and fisheries.
• SA2. Develop inclusive agriculture and ecosystem-based markets for local prosperity, to open economic pathways for local communities in and around the GMAs by stimulating private investment, creating, and facilitating market access, and strengthening agricultural, conservation tourism, and sustainable forest, wildlife, and fisheries value chains.
• SA3. Strengthen community maternal and child health capacities and improve access to safe drinking water for communities in the eastern Kafue GMAs to improve community health and reduce the human, economic, and ecological burdens of high maternal and child diseases, mortality, and water insecurity.
• SA4. Develop effective land and resource use planning, tenure and Community governance systems with Eastern Kafue communities and stakeholders, both inside and bordering the GMAs.

2.0 Background

The project is implemented in three-four (4) GMAs of Mumbwa, Namwala, Nkala and Lunga-Luswishi GMAs. This RFQ, project under SA2, “Develop inclusive agriculture and ecosystem-based markets for local prosperity” has identified the need to implement and promote beekeeping production in Upper Lunga Luswishi GMA in Mujima Nzovu area. The overall goal is to improve the protection and management of forests, natural resources, and biodiversity in the eastern Kafue landscape, ensuring meaningful participation and equitable benefits for local communities. The project follows a holistic approach to conservation and community development, addressing underlying drivers of ecosystem degradation and mitigating direct threats to resources and livelihoods.

In upper Lunga Luswishi GMA, the project site focuses on Mujima Nzovu in the Mushindamo district.  It is a miombo woodland area abundant in non-timber forest products, and the local communities have a traditional heritage of honey production. The project site is located approximately 200 kilometres from the city of Kitwe.   The Mujima Nzovu project site, with its miombo woodland ecosystems and rich non-timber forest products, provides valuable opportunities for conservation and sustainable utilization of natural resources. The project aims to leverage this community’s traditional expertise in honey production, among others, to enhance their livelihoods and contribute to the long-term ecological well-being of the landscape.

3.0 Solicitation Purpose and Criteria

The project has identified honey production as a significant conservation-friendly, forest-based enterprise that can effectively increase incomes and improve the livelihoods of local communities while achieving conservation dividends in upper Lunga Luswishi GMA. To enhance honey productivity in upper Lunga Luswishi the project seeks suppliers of key beekeeping equipment.
