The Senior Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring full compliance with international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001) and Trident’s HSE policies. This role leads safety officers, drives incident investigations, and implements proactive safety measures to foster a zero-harm culture across operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. HSE Systems & Compliance

  • Implement and monitor Trident’s Occupational Health & Safety Management System.
  • Ensure adherence to Zambian mining safety lawsISO 45001, and company policies.
  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments (VFLs, JSAs).
  • Oversee corrective actions from audits/incidents via Trident’s Event Management System (EMS).

2. Leadership & Team Supervision

  • Mentor and evaluate safety officers to enhance HSE performance.
  • Lead safety meetings with supervisors, superintendents, and managers.
  • Develop and deliver HSE training programs (inductions, toolbox talks).

3. Incident Management & Reporting

  • Investigate all incidents/accidents using root-cause analysis (RCA).
  • Prepare detailed investigation reports with actionable recommendations.
  • Track incident trends and propose preventive measures.

4. Policy Development & Culture Building

  • Draft and roll out new safety procedures (e.g., emergency response, PPE protocols).
  • Promote behavioral safety initiatives (e.g., STOP cards, peer observations).
  • Ensure real-time HSE record-keeping in EMS.

5. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with department heads to integrate safety into operational plans.
  • Communicate safety alerts and best practices to all workforce levels.

Required Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in mining safety regulations (Mines Safety Dept., OSHA).
  • Proficiency in HSE management systems (ISO 45001, OHSAS 18001).
  • Advanced incident investigation techniques (e.g., TapRooT, 5 Whys).
  • Skilled in data analysis for safety performance reporting.

Behavioral Traits

  • Assertive leadership with ability to influence change.
  • Proactive risk identification and problem-solving.
  • High emotional intelligence for conflict resolution.
  • Uncompromising commitment to zero harm.

Qualifications & Experience

Mandatory

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Engineering, or Occupational Health (ZAQA-verified).
  • 5+ years in mining/industrial HSE, with 2+ years in a supervisory role.
  • Valid Zambian driver’s license.
  • First Aid Certification (Advanced preferred).

Certifications (Advantageous)

  • NEBOSH IGC / IOSH Managing Safely.
  • SAMTRAC or equivalent HSE diploma.
  • Auditor training for ISO 45001.
