Background

The Individual Life Underwriter is a key revenue enabling role responsible for assessing and underwriting new retail life insurance business. The role ensures strong risk management, fast turnaround times, regulatory compliance, and a consistently high quality customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite retail life insurance proposals in line with company underwriting guidelines and approved risk appetite.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date policy data on the Life Administration System.
  • Prepare and manage policy documentation and related administrative processes.
  • Handle retail underwriting aspects of complaints and claims within agreed service timelines.
  • Perform premium lodging and reconciliation, including computation of commissions.
  • Support retail reporting, internal audits, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Work closely with Sales, Finance, Claims, Reinsurance, and Operations teams to support premium growth and service excellence.
  • Contribute to process improvements, system enhancements, and underwriting training for sales teams.

  • High-quality underwriting decisions that balance business growth with sound risk management.
  • Minimal errors, premium leakage, and audit exceptions.
  • Improved customer confidence through consistent, transparent, and fair underwriting practices.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Certificate with a minimum of 5 O’ Levels (Credit or better).
  • Diploma in Insurance or any business-related qualification.
  • A degree will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in individual life underwriting or a similar role.
