OVERVIEW
Cricket Builds Hope (“CBH”), a UK registered charity, requires a new Project Director/Country Manager to represent it in Rwanda and to drive its twin objectives of securing the future operation, maintenance and eventual improvement of the Gahanga Cricket Stadium and of running programmes focused on using cricket as a tool for social change in Rwanda.
After six challenging years and £1m of fundraising, CBH (formerly known as the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation) organised the construction in Gahanga sector of the Stadium, Rwanda’s first purpose-built cricket ground, which was then opened by HE the President at the end of 2017. The Stadium has become an iconic venue and has been nominated for a number of architectural awards.
Building the Stadium was a first step. The task now is to maintain, operate and eventually expand its facilities and maximise its use as a cricket and community hub. In partnership with the Rwanda Cricket Association (“RCA”), we have made a good start. The Stadium is owned by a Rwandan registered NGO called Gahanga Cricket Stadium (“GCS”). This operates as a joint venture between CBH and RCA. The Stadium has been used extensively for training sessions and matches. Over 140 matches have been hosted in the first twelve months, from grassroots cricket to Rwanda’s first international tournament – the ICC World T20 East Africa Qualifier in July.
As well as securing a sustainable future for the Stadium, CBH’s aim is to use cricket as a tool for social change. Our first programme, funded by Comic Relief and the Scottish Government, is going well. After successfully completing a pilot, we are about to enter the second year of the programme. It is focused on unlocking the leadership skills of 19-25-year-old Rwandan women from deprived backgrounds. The sessions are held at the Stadium and uniquely use cricket skills and values to illustrate and reinforce the programme’s messages.
Separately we are finalising a 3-year programme with a sponsor and the RCA which will introduce cricket into four rural communities and between 12 and 15 neighbouring schools. The target is to coach between 300 and 400 children per year. This initiative will help to spread cricket’s special qualities to remote areas far from Kigali.
The Board of Trustees is looking for a Project Director/Country Manager with proven business/NGO administration, finance, accounting and management experience to secure CBH’s objectives.
The CBH Board of Trustees consists of a dedicated group of volunteers who are based in London, UK.

PROJECT DIRECTOR - ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The role of the CBH Project Director will be hugely challenging, but immensely exciting and rewarding. The Project Director will be based in Kigali, Rwanda, and responsible for all aspects of CBH and achieving its stated twin objectives. Whilst the bulk of the work will be Rwanda-based, it will extend to ensuring that CBH operates in compliance with UK requirements and, in particular, those imposed by the UK Charity Commission as well as any relevant requirements in Rwanda.

    • Being responsible for overseeing delivery of CBH’s own social change programmes, ensuring that existing programmes comply with all relevant agreements and regulatory requirements both in Rwanda and in the UK.
  • Developing and implementing new programmes and monitoring and evaluating any proposed or on-going programmes to ensure they are robust and meet the CBH’s objectives.

  • In relation to both CBH and GCS, assisting in sharing received invoices from suppliers and assist in raising invoices to debtors with the relevant Treasurer.
  • Ensuring prompt payment of GCS and CBH staff salaries in compliance with the relevant employment contracts and discharge of all obligations on CBH and GCS relating to taxation and contributions to social security, pensions or like matters.
  • Reviewing and making recommendations on financial and non-financial controls to mitigate our risk and ensuring such controls are adhered to and to report any issues (or misrepresentation of cash) to the Board of Trustees.
  • Assisting in writing and reviewing CBH’s Trustees’ Annual Report to ensure that it contains all required information.

Partnerships

  • Dealing with sponsors (including Yorkshire Tea, Volcanoes Safaris, Surrey CCC) and developing further partnerships with organisations such as the ECB and the ICC.
  • Generally working closely with partners, sponsors, and donors (current and potential) in Rwanda and (when reasonably requested) in the UK to develop integrated programmes and thereby obtain external funding for both CBH and GCS.
  • Monitoring compliance by CBH with its obligations under MOUs, usage agreement and funding agreements with RCA, Minispoc and other partner organisations.

Fundraising/Marketing

  • As Chair of GCS, taking the lead in promoting fundraising and marketing initiatives to other members of the GCS Executive.
  • Working closely with the CBH Chair of Fundraising on any in country initiatives and to provide such support as may reasonably required for UK based initiatives. This may involve the occasional visit to the UK for events, with related expenses being paid by CBH.
  • Establishing CBH as a recognisable brand.

Media/Communications

  • Dealing with media requests and acting as a spokesman for CBH on matters pertaining to Rwanda.
  • Developing and editing communications material for the organisation such as brochures, website material, social media posts, posters, electronic newsletters.
  • Taking such role as the CBH Chair of Media and Communications may reasonably request in maintaining and updating the CBH and GCS websites and social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Newsletter).
  • Giving presentations talks to in country donors, schools, media etc.

General

  • Circulating the Agenda (with supporting papers) in advance of CBH Trustees’ meetings (normally held bimonthly in the UK) and attending and taking minutes at those meetings on Skype or in person.
  • Attending all GCS Executive Committee and General Assemblies (held in Kigali) and procuring that the GCS Secretary circulated minutes of business transacted at those meetings.
  • Managing relationships and communications with the Board of Trustees and Advisors

  • Organising and storing CBH and GCS key documentation on Dropbox.

  • Standing and experience to represent both CBH and GCS in negotiations with all their key partners – RCA, Rwandan Government, official agencies, commercial sponsors and the like.
  • Experience and knowledge to manage, at all levels, both CBH in country and GCS, dealing efficiently with budgets, accounts, line management of staff, business plans, legal requirements and partners.
