Two Graduate Researcher Positions – Social Science and Engineering
Zambart and the University of Zambia School of Engineering are looking for two new graduates – a social science graduate and an engineering graduate.
The graduates will work on a study assessing water and sanitation infrastructure and social organization in two Lusaka communities using and adapting a rapid assessment approach called ‘Broad Brush Surveys’ (BBS). The applied research will contribute to understanding water and sanitation needs and challenges and an interactive manual on the BBS method. The study is also being carried out in Cape Town, South Africa where it is led by the University of Stellenbosch.
This exciting short-term job opportunity aims to provide new graduates with training in qualitative research, mapping, stakeholder liaison, academic writing and interactive resources. The successful graduates will be based at Zambart, Ridgeway Campus. The position is for one year.
Study Title: Rapid assessment of urban communities to optimise Public Health Interventions: water infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa (RINSS)

Funder: Global Challenges Research Fund, British Academy & Royal Academy of Engineering .
Responsibilities
• Conducting BBS data collection in two Lusaka communities
• Writing up, managing and analyzing fieldwork
• Supporting stakeholder liaison
• Supporting study outputs (policy, practical, academic)
• Supporting preparation of reports for the funder on the study activities

Minimum requirements
• For the social scientist: Degree in Development Studies, Environmental Health or any other linked social science or health related qualification from a reputable higher education institution
• For the engineer: Environmental Engineering, Water Engineering, Water resources Engineering Building Sciences, Construction Management from a reputable higher education institution
• Degree awarded should be Merit or above
• Desire for a career in academic research
• Experience conducting or implementing community-based research and/or education participatory activities OR water reticulation, Water Supply, Construction technology (water and sanitation) or any project related to water and sanitation improvement as an undergraduate
• Strong communications skills and ability to collaborate effectively
• Organized and self-directed individual with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgement, high ethical standards, and operational focus
• Able to start work immediately
