Overall Purpose of the Job
The Dean of Schools will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the faculties, providing strategic leadership and oversight for teaching, learning, research, and community engagement activities. The role requires an individual with a strong academic background, excellent leadership skills, and a deep understanding of higher education governance and regulatory requirements in Zambia. The Dean will work collaboratively with academic staff, management, students, and external stakeholders to advance the mission and vision of the university college.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide visionary leadership in the development, implementation, and review of academic programmes in line with HEA and ZAQA guidelines.
- Oversee the recruitment, development, and performance management of academic staff within the faculty.
- Ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment, and promote a culture of academic excellence and innovation.
- Coordinate research initiatives and encourage scholarly output among faculty members.
- Foster partnerships with industry, professional bodies, and other academic institutions locally and internationally.
- Ensure compliance with all higher education regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and quality assurance standards.
- Prepare and manage the faculty’s academic and operational budgets.
- Represent the faculty on institutional committees and participate in governance activities of the university college.
- Provide academic leadership in curriculum development and student success initiatives.
- Promote a supportive, inclusive, and student-centered academic environment.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- A Master’s degree in a relevant academic discipline from a recognized institution.
- A minimum of five (5) years post-qualifying experience in higher education teaching at a recognized tertiary institution.
- Demonstrated experience in academic leadership or management roles is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) standards and Zambia Qualifications Framework (ZAQF).
Preferred Competencies and Skills
- Strong leadership, planning, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to inspire, motivate, and manage diverse academic teams.
- Sound understanding of higher education policy, quality assurance, and curriculum development.
- Capacity to build partnerships and engage with external stakeholders.
- Proficient in academic governance, strategic thinking, and problem-solving.
- Commitment to promoting research, innovation, and student success.
