Job description:
Job title: Area Supervisor, Production – South East Dome
Site: Kansanshi
Department: Mining Operations
Section: Mine Production, Consumables
Position reports to: Shift Supervisor, Production – South East Dome
Direct reports: Assistant Production, and Operators
Purpose
The Area Supervisor, Production – South East Dome is responsible for coordinating and supervising daily load and haul activities within an assigned area of the South East Dome pit. The role ensures production targets are met safely and efficiently while promoting operational discipline, safety compliance, and effective use of mining equipment and resources. This frontline leadership position plays a critical role in translating shift objectives into actionable tasks for the production crew.
Key Responsibilities
- The incumbent will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
- Supervise assigned equipment operators and crew, including trucks, shovels, dozers, and support machinery.
- Execute daily shift instructions as per production plans and supervisor directives.
- Monitor performance and productivity of crew and equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
- Conduct pre-shift toolbox talks, safety briefings, and on-the-job coaching.
- Promote safety-first behavior and ensure prompt reporting of hazards, near misses, and incidents.
- Assist in area inspections to identify safety or operational risks and implement corrective actions.
- Communicate equipment breakdowns or delays to the Shift Supervisor and Maintenance team.
- Maintain accurate records of shift activities, including delays, loads hauled, and equipment hours.
- Support crew development by identifying training needs and mentoring less experienced team members.
- Foster teamwork, high morale, and discipline among crew members.
- Participate in incident investigations and implement improvement actions.
- Carry out any other production-related duties as assigned by the Shift Supervisor.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 Certificate
- Certificate or Diploma in Mining, Mineral Science, or equivalent qualification (minimum)
- Valid Blasting License
- First Aid Certificate
- Driver’s License
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in open-pit mining operations
- At least 1 year in a supervisory or leading hand position
- Solid understanding of load and haul processes and open-pit mining cycle
- Experience with production equipment including trucks, excavators, shovels, and dozers
- Knowledge of mining regulations, safety protocols, and environmental practices
- Strong leadership, communication, and team coordination skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet production targets
- Computer literacy and familiarity with fleet management systems (e.g., Modular, Wenco)
