The Artisan Boilermaker is responsible for high-quality metal fabrication, welding, and structural steel/pipework assembly in compliance with company standards and safety regulations. This role requires precision in interpreting technical drawings, operating fabrication machinery, and adhering to welding codes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Fabrication & Welding

  • Fabricate structural steel components and pipework from technical drawings.
  • Perform SMAW (MMA) and GMAW (MIG/MAG) welding to AWS/AS/NZS standards.
  • Use Oxy-Acetylene, Plasma cutting, and air arc gouging for metal preparation.
  • Ensure all welds meet quality and code requirements (AWS D1.1/D14.3 or AS/NZS 1554).

2. Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate forklifts, break presses, guillotines, rollers, and profile cutters.
  • Handle materials using proper lifting techniques and rigging protocols.

3. Compliance & Safety

  • Conduct THINK Risk Assessments and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) before tasks.
  • Maintain 5S housekeeping standards in the workshop.
  • Report safety incidents and near-misses promptly.

4. Documentation & Quality Control

  • Interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and material specs.
  • Develop template patterns for complex components.
  • Verify dimensions using precision measuring tools.

Required Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Certified in SMAW or GMAW (5G position) per AWS/AS/NZS.
  • Proficient in metal cutting, forming, and joining techniques.
  • Ability to read and execute complex fabrication drawings.

Behavioral Traits

  • Team player with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Safety-first mindset and adherence to PPE protocols.
  • Detail-oriented with commitment to quality standards.

Qualifications & Experience

Mandatory

  • Grade 12 Certificate (ZAQA-verified).
  • Crafts Certificate/Diploma in Boilermaking or Welding.
  • 3+ years’ experience in welding/boilermaking (mining/industrial preferred).
  • Valid Zambia Driver’s License.
  • EIZ Membership.

Certifications (ZAQA-Certified)

  • Weld Coding in SMAW/GMAW (5G position) to:
    • AWS D1.1 (Structural Steel) or
    • AWS D14.3 (Earthmoving Equipment) or
    • AS/NZS 1554 Part 1 (Australian/New Zealand Standard).

Advantageous

  • Forklift operation license.
  • Experience with CNC cutting machines.
