Job Description
The primary role of the machine specialist is maintaining, repair and optimise plant and associated devices to ensure that plant availability and product quality at minimum cost; without sacrificing standards. The role also entails providing specialised machine skill and knowledge to the shift team, and to support the operations, maintenance and problem solving activities of the shift teams. The role reports to the Packaging Engineer.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
• The Control & Automation continuously evaluates the existing process control systems for reliability of control and effectiveness. In fulfilling these roles, the Machine Specialist works closely with team department members, maintenance, and operations.
• Provide day-to-day technical support on process control systems and process control related tasks. Support implementation of new projects by configuring control modules, batch programs, and HMI graphics.
• Responsible for all computer integration of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and process controls.
• Work as part of a team to plan, analyze and control the quality of processes.
• Inspect, repair, and adjust Programmable Logic Controls (PLC), and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and related equipment using electrical test equipment, circuit diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
• Partake in carrying out running repairs on plant and equipment or support the shift artisans in carrying out repairs.
• Solicits external specialist assistance where required, e.g. OEM’s (as agreed with the Packaging Engineer).
• Apply the correct problem-solving methodologies to resolve problem.
• Coach / train Operators on autonomous maintenance tasks
• Perform routine and specialized duties in the repair and maintenance of instruments and controls involved in bringing materials from a raw state to a state that is ready for our customers

• Must be able to carry out mechanical and electrical maintenance work.
• Minimum Diploma/Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from a recognised institution
• Minimum of three (3) years maintenance experience in industrial control system development and troubleshooting.
• Grade 12 Certificate with 6 credits or better
• Strong PLC skills with expertise in system administrative and maintenance activities, and hardware and software troubleshooting
• Experience programming in multiple languages that are IEC 61131-3 compliant.
