Background information about the job or company:
The Environmental and Social Safeguard Expert (ESSE) will ensure that all project activities are implemented in compliance with environmental and social standards outlined in the Project Implementation Manual (PIM), Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP), and Environmental and Social Commitment Plan (ESCP). Under the supervision of the Lead Expert and in coordination with PIU Safeguards Specialists, the ESSE will provide technical guidance, conduct risk assessments, and support the integration of safeguards into subproject design and execution. The expert will build capacity among stakeholders, facilitate stakeholder engagement, monitor safeguard implementation, and develop tools and manuals to promote sustainability, inclusivity, and regulatory compliance across all levels of the project.
Responsibilities or duties:
- Ensure compliance with environmental and social standards
- Provide technical guidance and conduct risk assessments
- Support integration of safeguards into subproject design and execution
- Build capacity among stakeholders and facilitate engagement
- Monitor safeguard implementation and develop tools for sustainability
Qualifications or requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Social Sciences with a minimum of 10 years’ work experience
- Master’s degree in Environmental or Social Sciences is an added advantage
- Proven understanding and hands-on experience with environmental and social risk management tools and plans
- Experience working with contractors and beneficiaries with robust ESHS management systems
- Familiarity with environmental compliance and project monitoring processes
Experience needed:
- Knowledge and experience in stakeholder engagement
- Practical experience in the preparation and implementation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Project Briefs (EPBs)
- In-depth knowledge of ZEMA EIA Regulations and international safeguard standards
