1. The Project
We Effect Regional Office for Southern Africa is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Sustainable Cotton for Women and Youth Empowerment in Southern Africa project (2019 – 2022) project, while the partner organisations the Eastern and Southern African Cotton Organisation (ESACO); Cotton Association of Zambia (CAZ); Mozambique National Forum of Cotton Producers (FONPA); Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU); and African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) are responsible for the implementation of the project.
The project’s objective is “Women, men and youth cotton farmers have increased incomes and sustainable livelihoods in targeted communities of Malawi Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe through creation of 55, 000 decent jobs”. Value addition, production and trading in certified cotton, based on an existing standard, such as Better Cotton (BC) or Fair Trade and Organic (FTO) cotton will be key intervention strategies employed to achieve the objective. The certification scheme that will be promoted shall be identified and selected after a deeper analysis in the study during inception phase of the project. The analysis of the certification scheme will be based on various factors such as market demand and prices offered, the feasibility for ginneries and smallholder cotton farmers, especially women and youths, to implement the exact certification scheme and the benefit for smallholder farmers and ginneries. .

Job Responsibilities:
• To undertake a detailed analysis about the existing cotton certification situation in the four countries and the current cotton demand on the regional and international market, including the reason for only just over a fifth (21%) of cotton is actively sourced as more sustainable cotton by companies while the bulk remainder is traded as conventional cotton.
• To inform about the possibility of supporting the selected certification standard and its requirements at production, ginning and weaving. It will provide an insight into the adequacy of the selected certification standard based on market demand for certified cotton, the price difference, the requirements on the farmers, ginning companies and the weavers.
• To investigate the possibility for smallholder farmers and women and youth in particular to become certified cotton producers, participate in a value chain requiring certified produce and what benefits that could bring to the farmers.

  Job Qualifications:
• Have a relevant Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Business Management, Administration, Agriculture, Economics, or related field
• Have at least 5 years of experience from projects and/or production, marketing and sales of agricultural products in Southern Africa and internationally,
• Have excellent knowledge of and insights into cotton certification in Southern Africa and at least 2 years of work experience related to Cotton certification.
• Have at least 3 years of experience from the Cotton sector including production by smallholder farmers and larger farming units, ginning, marketing and sales in Southern Africa
• Have excellent contacts within and knowledge about the value chains for cotton production and export from Southern Africa.
• Have knowledge of the international market for cotton and certified cotton.
• Have experience of value chain development and inclusion of smallholder farmers in agricultural value chains including export
• Have excellent English communication skills and writing skills
Beneficial qualifications:
• Knowledge of certification standards, requirements and procedure.
• Experience and knowledge of working with women and youth.
• Experience of organisational development to form viable sustainable organisations in the cooperative sector.
• Working knowledge of Portuguese (both oral and written)
• Fluent in any of the local languages
