Head of Insurance – Zambia
Reports to : CEO
Location : Lusaka
Department : Assurance
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To establish, lead and grow the company’s insurance operation in Zambia, with a focus on penetrating the emerging individual and group life funeral insurance markets. The incumbent will be responsible for driving market entry strategies, developing distribution channels, ensuring regulatory compliance, and building a sustainable insurance business aligned with the Group’s vision of being trusted and supportive partner in times of need.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Enhance and diversify product offerings to meet evolving customer needs and drive
- growth by identifying and leveraging cross-selling opportunities in the market.
- Develop and execute a growth strategy for the Zambian insurance operation aligned with group goals.
- Accountable for insurance sales performance
- Responsible for portfolio growth and achievement of the insurance strategic KPIs
- Identify market opportunities and design fit for purpose funeral life insurance solutions.
- Build strategic partnerships with community groups, employers, religious institutions, financial institutions and cooperatives to drive group scheme uptake.
- Ensure full compliance with the Zambian regulatory framework and licensing requirements.
- Manage claims ratios.
- Support talent development and create future local leaders within the insurance business.
- Collaborate with funeral services and other business units to ensure integration and cross-selling.
- Analyse key performance indicators and implement improvements.
- Develop and implement alternative insurance product distribution
- Conduct thorough market research to identify emerging trends, customer needs, and competitive dynamics.
- Monitor financial performance against targets, identifying and addressing variances.
- Build, Lead and mentor a high-performing Insurance team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous development.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, or any related field.
- Master’s Degree will be an added advantage
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in the insurance industry, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Experience working in or with insurance markets in Zambia or Southern Africa.

- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement.
- Analytical thinking and financial literacy.
- Deep understanding of insurance operations and compliance.
- Innovative thinking
