The Senior Heavy-Duty Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance and reliability of the company’s construction and industrial fleet, including trucks, forklifts, cranes, bulldozers, and other heavy machinery. This role involves performing diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, and servicing equipment both on-site and in the workshop while adhering to safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Equipment Inspection & Diagnostics
- Conduct thorough inspections of trucks, cranes, forklifts, bulldozers, and other heavy equipment to identify mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical faults.
- Use computerized diagnostic tools to assess equipment performance.
- Perform preventive maintenance checks to minimize breakdowns.
2. Repairs & Maintenance
- Repair and replace faulty parts (engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical components).
- Service and maintain diesel engines, braking systems, and powertrains.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems efficiently.
3. Workshop & Field Service
- Perform on-site repairs when equipment breaks down at job locations.
- Ensure all work complies with company safety policies and manufacturer guidelines.
- Maintain a clean and organized workshop with proper tool management.
4. Record Keeping & Compliance
- Keep detailed maintenance logs of all inspections, services, and repairs.
- Ensure all repairs meet industry and OEM standards.
- Report major faults and recommend equipment replacements when necessary.
5. Team Collaboration & Leadership
- Provide technical guidance to junior mechanics and apprentices.
- Work closely with operations teams to prioritize urgent repairs.
- Train staff on best practices in equipment maintenance.
Required Skills & Attributes
Technical Skills
- Expertise in heavy equipment mechanics (trucks, cranes, forklifts, bulldozers).
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, welding equipment, and repair machinery.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals and schematics.
Soft Skills
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work under pressure.
- Team player with good communication skills.
- Adaptability to work in field or workshop environments.
- Commitment to safety and operational best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Certifications
- Diploma in Heavy Equipment Mechanics / Automotive Engineering (or related field).
- Certification in diesel mechanics or hydraulic systems (a plus).
Work Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience repairing heavy-duty machinery.
- Experience with construction/mining equipment (trucks, cranes, bulldozers, forklifts).
- Ability to work independently or lead a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift heavy parts (50kg+) and work in challenging environments.
- Willingness to travel to job sites when required.
