Purpose of Job
To provide expert legal representation and leadership within UP Zambia and its legal chambers, Swensi Legal Practitioners, overseeing legal services to clients, guiding advocacy and sensitization activities, and managing the staff attorney team to promote a restorative justice system in Zambia.
Legal Representation & Oversight
- Lead and oversee legal representation for UP Zambia clients, through its legal chambers, Swensi Legal Practitioners, particularly in complex or high-profile cases involving children, young adults, and other vulnerable groups.
- Supervise, mentor, and support Staff Attorneys, junior legal staff, and interns, ensuring high-quality legal services and professional development.
- Allocate and manage case assignments across the legal team, in coordination with the Executive Director, to ensure effective caseload distribution and resource utilization.
- Review and approve legal documents, pleadings, and research prepared by legal team members.
- Provide direct representation in court for critical or precedent-setting cases as needed.
- Oversee the collection and reporting of case data and outcomes to Monitoring and Evaluation staff.
- Lead or support strategic litigation that advances UP Zambia’s mission and the best interests of clients
Advocacy and Sensitization
- Lead engagement with key stakeholders, including government agencies, judiciary, partner organizations, and the media, on issues arising from UP Zambia’s work.
- Oversee and contribute to advocacy and sensitization activities, including drafting articles, policy briefs, and public statements.
- Contribute to the development of IEC and promotional materials to effectively communicate the organization’s key messages.
- Cultivate and manage relationships with law firms, institutions, and other partners to strengthen pro bono and legal aid programs.
- Represent UP Zambia at high-level meetings, forums, and events.
Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Contribute to the strategic planning of UP Zambia’s legal work and broader organizational goals.
- Provide input to funding proposals and organizational reports related to legal activities.
- Lead and facilitate in-house and external legal trainings, workshops, and capacity-building initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, legal ethics, and best practices within the legal team.
Administration & Reporting
- Manage and account for organizational funds disbursed for legal activities, ensuring transparency and compliance.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive monthly progress reports to the Executive Director.
- Perform additional duties and provide services as may be assigned by the Executive Director.
Key Attributes & Competence
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, LLM is an added advantage
- Admission to the Zambian Bar with a minimum of 5 years at the Bar
- Experience in litigation and courtroom advocacy, preferably involving children, young adults, or vulnerable groups.
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience within a legal team.
- Strong skills in legal research, drafting, and review of legal documents.
- Experience in advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and strategic litigation is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to justice, ethics, and professional standards
- Comfortable with assignment and relocation outside Lusaka to supervise new legal office openings
