Job title: Shift Supervisor, Production – South East Dome

Position reports to: Coordinator, Production – South East Dome
Grade: 16
Direct reports: Area Supervisors, Production – South East Dome
Purpose
The Shift Supervisor, Production – South East Dome is responsible for supervising day-to-day load and haul operations during assigned shifts, ensuring safe and efficient execution of mining activities aligned with shift targets and operational standards. The role provides frontline leadership to a production crew and ensures optimal equipment usage, safety compliance, and adherence to production schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- The incumbent will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.
- Supervise production crews during shifts, including truck and shovel operators, spotters, and support equipment operators.
- Monitor and manage shift production targets, coordinating with dispatch and technical teams to ensure efficient haulage and loading.
- Conduct pre-shift meetings and safety briefings; reinforce safety standards and corrective actions where needed.
- Promote and maintain high standards of workplace discipline, motivation, and crew development.
- Report and log equipment performance, shift activities, production data, and any incidents accurately and timely.
- Inspect work areas and equipment to ensure safe, clean, and productive conditions.
- Provide feedback to the Coordinator and Maintenance teams on equipment availability, breakdowns, and performance issues.
- Act as the first point of contact for resolving minor operational or personnel issues during the shift.
- Ensure that operational instructions are clearly understood and implemented by the crew.
- Participate in investigations of incidents, near misses, and equipment damages.
- Perform other duties as required to support production operations.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 Certificate
- Diploma in Mining, Mineral Science, or related qualification (minimum)
- Valid Blasting License
- First Aid Certificate
- Driver’s License
Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in open-pit mining, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or team lead role
- Practical understanding of open-pit production processes and heavy equipment operations (trucks, shovels, dozers, etc.)
- Solid knowledge of mining operations, rules, and safety regulations
- Demonstrated leadership in a production environment
- Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced mining environment
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Proficiency in using PCs and relevant mining software systems
- Familiarity with fleet management or dispatch systems (e.g., Modular, Wenco)

Key Responsibilities The incumbent will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function. Oversee daily administrative operations within the mining operations department. Facilitate the flow of information and ensure that all stakeholders are informed of relevant updates and changes. Coordinate meetings, briefings, and other management communication activities with the production team Coordinate with other departments, such as HR, Training, Finance, and Commercial, to ensure seamless communication and workflow. Manage career progression for all operators and production assistants under mining operations Oversee the upkeep and standard outlook of the mining admin buildings and surrounding areas Manage operator score card and upskilling program Management of production satellite storage facility and inventory min/max and shelve life to ensure sufficient consumables are available Managing all mining operations admin projects from planning, budgeting, monitoring and implementation Preparation of performance reports to management and taking ownership of quality of work Ensures that site safety and regulatory compliance standards are met in day to day activities
Ability to work under pressure and unquestionable integrity Overtime when necessary Exposure to dust, heat and noise Computer literacy Conversant with MS office packages, Power BI and MS Projects Conversant with mining software e.g. Surpac, Deswik or AutoCAD
Qualifications Full Grade 12 Certificate Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field Project management or Business administration is added advantage Blasting License Valid Driver’s License Experience At least 5 years post University graduation working as Mining Engineer in Open pits At least 2 years in leadership role BEHAVIOURAL TRAITS Teamwork Bold and smarter initiative Ability to priorities and manage multiple tasks Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills Must be dependable and self-motivated Ability to interact with people of different cultures Must possess some soft skills
