WWF-Zambia Country Office (WWF-ZCO) is seeking to hire a competent and highly motivated CONSULTANT, for the Forest Landscape Restoration Project implemented in the Silowana Complex (South Western Zambia) that is part of a larger Kavango-Zambezi transfrontier conservation area (KAZA).
Position Title: National Consultant
Consultancy: Map and Develop Possible Value Chains for NTFPs
Duration: 10 Man Days
Reports to: WWF FLR Project Coordinator
Location: Lusaka, Zambia
Assignment Description:
The Consultant will map and develop possible value chains for NTFPs for the target local communities (Lusu/Mutemwa; Silumbu; Kaale: Skuka; Kabula 2; and Mwanambao) under Sesheke and Sioma Districts, Western province. The results will be used to identify key value chains found in the Silowana Complex to be promoted by the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) project. This project is part of a regional program which started in January 2020 and takes place in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. On a national and regional level, the program aims for a regional exchange program for FLR between the 3 countries, develops standards for best practices in FLR including its up scaling and contributes to the AFR100 initiative. On a local level, WWF Zambia is in close cooperation with a local partner NGO (CBNRM Forum) for the implementation of activities on the ground. The Consultant will be required to map the economic potential of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), participatory develop possible value chains and set ups of sustainable NTFPs based enterprises, market linkages and access for smallholder farmers/ family enterprises in selected communities within the Silowana complex. At least two valid NTFP value chains should be identified and according business models developed for implementation, and promoted with communities for implementation. .

Major Tasks and Responsibilities
• Draft and present an inception report outlining envisaged timelines and modalities of how the assignment shall be undertaken within the duration specified, clearly stating the anticipated deliverables for this assignment,
• Map (clearly identify and document) and develop possible value chains for NTFPs found in target local communities for the FLR project located under the Silowana complex,
• To participatory develop possible value chains and set ups of sustainable NTFPs based enterprises, market linkages and access for smallholder farmers/ family enterprises in selected communities within the Silowana complex,
• Undertake a brief market assessment to identify local, national and regional trends, market size, supply and demand gaps for NTFPs related to the project sites,
• Integrate NTFPs value chains development in the upgrading of existing government markets in the landscape to serve as centres for plant production for reforestation and rehabilitation of degraded forestland areas, and as livelihoods improvement opportunities for the benefit of local people,
• Facilitate the adoption the best methods of extraction, propagation, treatment and preservation, and marketing of NTFPs value chains development to enhance sustainable forest management (SFM) for livelihoods improvement,
• Coordinate and engage with both the project direct and indirect target groups including project partners and relevant government departments for overall planning and participation in workshops/meetings for mapping and development of possible value chains for NTFPs in the project area,
• Draft and delivery a technical report providing very clear documentation of all mapped NTFPs found in the Silowana complex for development as NTFPs value chains.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor of science degree in forestry/natural resource/agriculture/agroforestry/biodiversity conservation and any such related fields,
• Minimum 5 years work experience in forestry products (particularly NTFPs) value chain mapping and development,
• Knowledgeable in the NTFPs as well as local knowledge and scientific understanding of the standard requirements for the efficiency extraction, processing and preservation of the non-timber forest resources’ value chain,
• Technical proficiency in the field of natural resource economics, forestry, agriculture, wildlife, and social development studies,
• Proven experience engaging with rural communities and government institutions at the national and local levels especially on forestry related programs,
• Experience of working in a large NGO environment complex, and/or global organizational networks,
• Familiarity with working within the Western part of Zambia is an added advantage,
Required Skills and Competencies:
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to network and to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels,
• Excellent skills in writing technical reports, orally articulating technical issues, interpreting complex social economic environments, and making presentations,
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, creative problem solving, and conflict management skills, effectively keeping timelines and deliverables,
• Excellent engagement, negotiation, diplomacy and lobbying skills,
• Demonstrated passion for local community forestry work, agriculture, conservation and social economic dynamics,
