Job Summary:

The WASH Coordinator will play a key role in supporting the sector manager in the development of strategies and providing tactical support to field teams for delivery of the market-based sanitation, hygiene and clean water access solutions with the goal of developing WASH markets in targeted areas. This position requires technical expertise in WASH programming to, conceptualize and actualize impactful and scalable private sector driven solutions ensuring feasibility, affordability and sustainability.

The coordinator will collaborate with market actors, private and public sector (including government), and the Field Operations team in the areas of implementation. The WASH Coordinator will also play a key role in facilitating the promotion of sustainable health and Nutrition activities in schools.

Key Responsibilities 

WASH Strategies, interventions and product development

  • Conducting WASH research, analysis and monitoring of the sub sector to inform intervention design for developing WASH markets in targeted areas.
  • Developing innovative WASH interventions and market driven solutions to enable iDE Zambia impactfully contribute to achieving set national goals and standards for good practices in sanitation, hygiene and clean water access
  • Developing sustainable and cost-effective strategies and business models which promote delivery of WASH solutions that are commercially viable, scalable and consistent with iDEs’ policy of private sector led market development.
  • Develop and power entrepreneurs to deliver and scale identified WASH solutions (services, products and technologies) in line with the aspirations of the iDE global WASH goal
  • Developing and promoting effective / sustainable behaviour change interventions among targeted populations to support and catalyze market development of targeted WASH solutions.
  • Pro-actively participate in new product development and improvement initiatives through designing, co-creating and piloting, ensuring designs and solutions meet national and local regulatory standards, guidelines and user needs.
  • Work closely with the “Last mile market delivery system” in integrating WASH services and products.
  • Participate in cross learning with WASH experts across iDE’s global portfolio to share lessons and incorporate best practices from other locations, when relevant
  • Promote and facilitate establishment of economically viable and sustainable MUS facilities to support WASH outcomes and for productive us

Implementation support, capacity building and Stakeholder Engagement.

  • Developing sub sector implementation plans, budgets and workplans to guide strategy roll out and inform quantitative and qualitative achievements of agreed results and deliverables
  • Support field teams in planning, scheduling and implementing sector activities on a monthly basis.
  • Providing technical assistance and guidance to the field teams including the development of appropriate tactical tools to support and guide field implementation and strategy roll out.
  • Developing training materials and providing technical training and coaching to the field teams to enhance their delivery capacity.
  • Planned field visits to Backstop implementation of field activities, gather firsthand feedback, ensuring that WASH interventions are yielding planned impact and scale.
  • Collaborate and work alongside other coordinators to align and integrate technical interventions with broader program objectives.
  • Identify key/lead private sector performance partners and build formal outcome defined / driven relationships consistent with iDE’s market approaches of leveraging the private sector to deliver impact and scale.
  • Engage with local authorities and public sector to ensure alignment with national sanitation, Hygiene and water policies and secure support for impact and scaling solutions.
  • Define and set market development performance deliverables and milestone targets with identified key/lead performance partners

Results monitoring, measurement, learning and reporting

  • Collaborate with MEAL department in developing performance Management frameworks for the sub sector.
  • Conduct regular tracking and evaluation of results, ensuring that interventions lead to measurable improvements in hygiene, sanitation and access to clean water.
  • Provide regular updates to the Sector Manager on the implementation progress, testing results, and field insights.
  • Collaborate with sector Manager in evaluating and documenting the effectiveness of planned interventions in delivering impact and identify areas of improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Strategy and Innovation Unit to document lessons learned, challenges, and opportunities to inform future iterations and scale-up strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with the MERL unit to track results within the sector that will ensure data driven decisions and adjustments.
  • Prepare Sector Monthly progress reports and contribute to grant reporting and proposal writing as may be required.
  • Share best practices and apply lessons learnt to program re-design, implementation and reporting.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Unit, contribute to enhancing the visibility of iDE Zambia to targeted key stakeholders through evidence-based field performance by planning for and celebrating milestone successes and performances.

Education & Professional Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Water Resource Management, Sanitation or Public Health.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in WASH related programming with a proven track record in leading initiatives that improve sanitation, hygiene, and access to clean water.
  • Policy & Strategy: Knowledge and experience in WASH sector guidelines, policy frameworks, and regulatory best practices to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Research & Analysis: Proven experience in conducting participatory context analyses and WASH system assessments at national and sub-national levels to inform program design.
  • Experience in Market Systems or Market-Based Approaches, Project Management certification and Human Centered Designs as added advantage

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including local communities, masons, designers, and government officials.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on practical and sustainable solutions.
  • Proficiency in project management tools.
  • Ability to travel frequently to project sites in the country.
  • Sensitivity to work in rural contexts and with women, youth, and ethnic groups.
  • Willingness to take on additional areas of responsibility relevant to the role.
  • Strong time management skills and can balance multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Ability to thrive in uncertain environments and can manage stress while problem-solving creatively.
