About This Role
The project aims to enhance sustainable, climate-resilient food production in 13 schools across three districts in two provinces of Zambia, benefiting 16498 learners. The initiative responds to the 2023/2024 El Niño-induced drought, which severely impacted agriculture, reducing food availability for the Home-Grown School Meals (HGSM) program. Reporting to the Manager Health Technical, the  Project Coordinator will be responsible and accountable for all aspects of the project, in particular conceptual strategic leadership, high quality contract deliverables/compliance, documentation and reporting. Working closely with the technical staff, partners and key stakeholders, the Project Manager will be responsible for planning, implementation, and monitoring of WFP-supported school feeding initiatives, ensuring effective delivery of nutritious meals to schoolchildren while strengthening national systems and promoting sustainability.

Primary Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Provide overall technical leadership and strategic oversight for the school feeding intervention and ensure quality project implementation across Lusaka, Kafue and Mazabuka districts.
  • Support building capacity and strengthening capabilities or skills of relevant staff in various functions through mentoring, training, knowledge/information exchange, experience sharing and technical expertise.
  • Develop and implement program strategies aligned with national education, nutrition, and food security goals with clear objectives, timelines, and performance indicators.
  • Oversee the establishment of 13 school gardens in target schools in 3 districts (Lusaka, Kafue and Mazabuka) including installation of irrigation systems.
  • Facilitate capacity building of teachers, learners and community members (PTC) in the management of school gardens employing smart agriculture techniques and market development including creating linkages of small holders’ farmers to schools as primary markets.
  • Oversee the implementation of project work plans, timelines, and budgets aligned with WFP’s school feeding strategy while identifying and mitigating operational risks, including supply chain disruptions.
  • Ensure project plans are implemented according to the approved budget and donor guidelines, and that standard procedures and policies are always adhered to.
  • Oversee daily operations of the school feeding program across all target schools by coordinating food procurement, storage, and distribution and ensure adherence to food safety standards and nutritional guidelines. (Verify with WFP regarding procurement and distribution)
  • Serve as the primary liaison between WFP, government ministries (e.g., Education, Agriculture, Health), NGOs, and communities and Advocate for transparency and public participation while working with parent-teacher associations and school management committees to foster community ownership and support integration of local farmers into the supply chain to boost rural livelihoods.
  • Lead the coordination of mentoring and coaching of partners on project content, M&E and finance to build technical and organizational capacity, while strengthening local stakeholders’ capacity in food handling, hygiene, and program sustainability.
  • Utilizing M&E data to refine program strategies and Timely preparation and submission of quality progress reports that meet the organizations/donor requirements, as stipulated in the contract. (Document lessons learnt and best practices)
  • Ensure project staff adhere to the organization’s programming principles, procurement, administrative and financial policies and ensure that ethical governance, compliance with legal and ethical standards in governance.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Education

  • Grade Twelve Certificate
  • A Degree in Agriculture, Education, Nutrition, Development Studies, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in project management, preferably in school feeding, food security, or education.
