JOB DETAILS:
An aquaculture professional with strong management skills is sought to manage the day-to-day genetic improvement research work particularly the Genetic Improvement Program (GIP) of Oreochromis andersonii in Mwekera at the National Aquaculture Research and development Centre (NARDC), Kitwe, Zambia.
This is line with the Genetic improvement program of the indigenous O. andersonii under the Zambia Aquaculture Development Enterprise Project (ZAEDP). The incumbent is expected to work closely with other members of the genetics and aquaculture team in collaboration with husbandry, feed, health and social scientists delivering integrated solutions to accelerate sustainable growth of aquaculture in Zambia. .

Job Responsibilities:
• Efficiently manage the breeding and genetic improvement programs for aquaculture species including genomic selection where appropriate.
• Novel fish breeds developed and disseminated through the successful design and implementation of high quality research on genetics related to improved aquaculture performance, with emphasis on tilapia and catfish farming in Zambia.
• Manage and supervise the research group in Mwekera at NARDC who run the breeding programs of the Oreochromis andersoii tilapia species.
• Troubleshoot problems at GIP work station and report back to WorldFish project leader.Strong inter-disciplinary research collaboration developed and maintained with other WorldFish scientists, particularly on research focusing on fish nutrition, health and husbandry, aquaculture technologies and social science (e.g. feeds/disease; impact studies).
• Support genetic data management produced to be used in the development of publishing high quality articles and technologies.
• Assist in planning and conducting training courses, field days, workshops and other such activities related to research, development and technology transfer associated with the fish selective breeding platform.
• Provide aquaculture technical support and guidance to the technical officer and ensure timely submission of information to the project leader for preparing scientific outputs and reports.
• Share knowledge and provide technical support of hatchery management and experimental skills to the team and our partners.
• Undertake field visits related to research projects and assist in the operation and maintenance of physical facilities such as research station ponds, equipment, and materials used in research project.

Job Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Aquaculture preferably in Fish breeding and genetics or a related field, candidate with PhD are also encourage to apply.
• Knowledge, practical experience and evidence of training in fish genetics and breeding techniques.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in managing aquaculture related projects.
• Experience with selective breeding and genetic improvement program of aquaculture species is preferred.
• Management skills with experience in supervising staff.
• Practical knowledge of fish selective breeding programs.
• Knowledge and experience of working with the aquaculture industry.
• Strong in essential computer software/packages like MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Access etc.
